Archive and backup file sizes differ between Acronis GUI and actual file sizes

Thread needs solution

When I compare "File Archives" using Acronis management console with the archive folder using Windows exporer, none of the sizes match. The archive "Occupied" size is 140GB, while the folder size is 200GB, 30% difference. "Occupied" size for the individual backups also doesn't match the actual file size for a file created on the same day. Even worse, the difference goes in both directions - sometimes it is smaller in ABR, sometimes it is smaller in reality.
Could you please explain the discrepancy, and is it something that would suggest archive corruption?
Thank you,
Pavla

 Hello Pavla!

Thank you for finding time to open the thread regarding this question!

Most probably the difference is caused by the size of Meta folder, which contains the data regarding the archive and is placed in the root folder of the backup location, but it's hard to say for sure without the investigation information. Please gather the following data:

  1. Acronis Info from the problem machine
  2. Screenshot of the backup location from Windows and from the product

After that please kindly contact support directly with the information attached. Keep in mind that should there be any procrastination with the reply, you can always specify us the case number. We will do our best to speed up the process.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Was this discrepancy between Acronis and Windows Explorer ever resolved? I am a new user, and have noticed the same problem. Acronis says 92.1 GB; Properties of C drive shows space used is 92.1 (agrees with Acronis), BUT Windows Explorer shows 62,197,264 KB (59.3 GB) What is going on here? I do not understand what the Moderator is saying, or how to go about doing any kind of verification.
Thanks,
Linda

I too have difficulty, but with an image that I excluded data from - TIH thinks the image has all data, WE clearly shows size differene consistent with data excluded or not excluded.

And note that:
- TIH uses compression, so WE will see smaller size on media the image is on
- an SSD without TRIM feature functional will show false value of space used, as at least some SSDs do not tell Windows that space from which data was deleted is actually available to re-use, until that space has been over-written with new data by the drive. (TRIM is supported in Windows 7 but the computer must be able to set AHCI as active)

Another thing to also be aware of is that the recovery partition commonly provided on laptops may not be shown by Windows Explorer, IBM/Lenovo hide it, WE’s My Computer view shows net capacity of the drive (probably subtracting an amount somewhat larger than actually used for the recovery partition).

Microsoft’s direct installation disk for Windows 7 does not install it.

And while on the subject, note that TIH 2013 is not good at refreshing the display of devices that an image could be written to, best to have the device plugged in before starting TIH.

My TIH 2014 is reporting a full backup size almost 3x actual size (TIH: 2.99 TB vs Windows: 1.03 TB on a 2 TB drive). TIH is also reporting "Versions 9" when I just set up the backup (using a pre-existing folder). Screen images attached. I don't care about the size or version discrepancies, but I do want to know that the backups will work!

Hi Douglas,
have you deleted any backup files in this chain manually?
Thank you.

This is not a chain. It is full backup. However, I may have deleted an earlier version of the chain manually a long time ago. But, it seemed to be working OK, and still does, except for the size discrepancy.

Hi Douglas, thank you for your reply!

The thing is, that all backups created within one backup plan are considered as a chain, program keeps information about them in metadata => for True Image the files that you deleted still exist.

The easiest way to fix the incorrect size in GUI would be to delete backup plan (backup box) from the console and then add backup back to the list. Please note that you'll need to re-create backup settings after that.

Thank you.

Thanks. I'll try it.

I added a new backup, and when it ran last night (reporting success), the size was even further off than the earlier one (see attached image). I may have used the same backup plan name in the past, but deleted it. Do I have to use a new backup plan name even if the earlier plan was deleted?
