Backup file naming convention

Thread needs solution

This may sound like a really dumb question but -
I recently upgraded from v9.1 Workstation to Backup & Recovery 10 Workstation build #11133
Using WinXP SP4
I have a second 150GB hard drive that I make all an Acronis secure zone. So I have a Secure Zone of 150GB on the second SATA Drive.
I just want to backup the WinXP System Drive to the Secure Zone.

I boot from an Acronis bootable CD.
When I create a Backup Plan I just enter an archive name.
I do not see anywhere where I can specify a file name separate from the Archive name.

My question is Acronis Backup & Recovery supposed to complete the filename?
If I add, say .tib then my archive is named with the .tib.
It seems confusing to me to have both the Archive Name and the file have exactly the same name.

I was already booted to Acronis from the CD so I just went in and tried to do a Recovery operation but I got a message that there were no backup files in the Archive.

I have read all the manuals and searched the forums but I can't answer this relatively simple question.

Manual says to enter the Path and an archive will be created. Does path require a file name extension?

I have been using VSS enabled but will turn that off to see if it makes a difference.

When I do a GFS backup plan the individual files get entered as Backup #1, Backup #2 Etc.

When I just name an archive with no . extension I sometimes do not have an archive file listed after doing a Full Backup Now operation with validation. Even though the Validation gave me a "Completed Successfully message"????

Can anybody answer this dumb but frustrating question?

I do not use your particular version of TI but. Yes, before you leave the screen, make sure there is a .tib extension if that is the file type your are saving to. Look a little further at the file name Window but there are some choices in other versions where the .tib is and is not added to the file name. The .tib is needed.

Hello all,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/ | Acronis Corporate Products]]

bridgecitygary,

Please note a radical change in the Acronis Secure Zone functionality. Acronis Secure Zone is considered as a personal vault. Once created on a managed machine, the zone is always present in the list of Personal vaults.

Therefore, while managing a backup task, you should select Acronis Secure Zone under Personal (vaults) item (you should completely unfold Personal string). When you select Acronis Secure Zone, and Acronis Secure Zone will appear in the path box. You should type the name of the archive in the Name box.

The same thing should be done during the recovery. Select Acronis Secure Zone under Personal item and allow the program to detect the archive -> OK. Under Archive select Content -> Change and select the desired backup you want to recover.

Thank you.

Thanks for these responses.
I wiped my WinXP pro CPU and started over.
Installed a licensed copy of Acronis BR10 Advanced Workstation build 11133.
Created a large Secure zone on HD #2. Entire 2nd drive is Secure zone of 150GB.
Activated Acronis Recovery Option.
Shutdown and booted back into Acronis with F11.
Imaged HD #1 with Acronis & verified archive.
After backup completion & verify I rebooted into Windows.
Modified & added some software and compelted some third party software setups.
Opened Acronis and Secure Zone archive did indeed have a 6GB Archive Image.
Shutdown again and rebooted into Acronis with the F11 option.
Created a second drive image to a different archive.
Also verified it.
Rebooted into windows and opened Acronis BR10.
Now I still have the first archive but the image file is missing and the archive size = 0 bytes.
Tried a recovery just to see what would happen. Now get a message that the archive is missing or corrupt.

Second image & archive are still there.
I no longer have the first archive file anymore.

This is more troubling than my earlier issue with the Recreated file names.
Now creating a second image to a different Archive name erases and earlier image in a different archive.

I need to be able to keep multiple images in different archives.
This is really frustrating!

Hello,

Thank you for your response.

The issue you are experiencing is rather strange. Could you please clarify a few moments?

Imaged HD #1 with Acronis & verified archive.
After backup completion & verify I rebooted into Windows.
Modified & added some software and compelted some third party software setups.
Opened Acronis and Secure Zone archive did indeed have a 6GB Archive Image.
Shutdown again and rebooted into Acronis with the F11 option.
Created a second drive image to a different archive.
Also verified it.

Was the first backup file accessible in Acronis Startup Recovery Manager?

Rebooted into windows and opened Acronis BR10.
Now I still have the first archive but the image file is missing and the archive size = 0 bytes.
Tried a recovery just to see what would happen. Now get a message that the archive is missing or corrupt.

Second image & archive are still there.
I no longer have the first archive file anymore.

Have you tried to hit the Refresh button or Show archives button? Have you tried to get the access to the archives under Acronis Bootable Rescue Media?

We should be sure that the first archive was overwritten physically, because there is a chance that the Windows part of the program has failed to detect the first archive properly.

Could you also please let us know if you experience the same program behavior while creating the archives under Acronis Bootable Rescue Media.

Thank you.

The archive is there but the file is gone.
Archive shows 0 Bytes & No Files.
Under Windows
Under F11 Recovery Option
Under boot from Bootable Rescue Media
Refresh makes no difference.
I tried a recovery under all and it give me an error saying there are no fiels to recover.

Archive appears to be truly & throughly gone.
The new file I could live without.
The one that is gone is the one I really needed!!

"I am here to sell you a computer, it will make your life easier", Arghh, I should have never listened to that very first computer sales pitch!!

Hello Gary,

Thank you for the provided information, it is very helpful.

I am creating a task, our QA Team will try to reproduce the issue. We can request some additional information from you if necessary, we appreciate your understanding in this matter.

We will keep you informed.

Thank you.

Hello Gary,

Unfortunately, QA team is unable to reproduce the issue. Do you agree to provide us with several diagnostic files?

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Yes I am willing to work with you. I just recently recommended we use your software as part of our company solution. I really want it to work.

So let me know what you need. This computer is a lab unit I can do whatever needs to be done.

Hello Gary,

Thank you for your response.

First of all, please delete all archives from Acronis Secure Zone (we should have a clean Acronis Secure Zone). After that please reproduce your actions and obtain some files.

At this stage please obtain the below files:

1. Download the file, run the downloaded file. The gathered information will be put in adv_report.zip in the same folder, where the AcronisInfo was saved. Running AcronisInfo may take up to 5 minutes.

2. Please create a screen shot of the program window where the archive is detected in Acronis Secure Zone (in Personal vaults).

If you are not familiar with making screen shots, please read the below step-by-step instructions.

- Get to the window which you want to make a screen shot of;

- Hit the (Alt+)PrintScreen button on your keyboard;

- Run Paint usually available in Start\Programs\Accessories or another graphics application;

- Choose Paste command in Edit menu;

- Save the result picture in JPEG format being preferable.

Shutdown again and rebooted into Acronis with the F11 option.

Created a second drive image to a different archive.
Also verified it.
Rebooted into windows and opened Acronis BR10.

Now I still have the first archive but the image file is missing and the archive size = 0 bytes.

Please obtain AcronisInfo file and the screen shot of the program window with the view of the archive.

Tried a recovery just to see what would happen. Now get a message that the archive is missing or corrupt.

Please create a screen shot of the error message.

Please upload the files to our FTP server (I am sending the credentials via PMs).

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Not sure what "PMs" is, but I have not received any ftp credentials as far as I can tell.
Please advise.

As far as backup file naming, I want to know if TI 10 can tag a unique identifier to a file name, like the date or a number or something. I do a full backup of my computer every night and I don't want the current day backup to overwrite yesterday's backup. What good does that do if I get a virus and that backup replaces the last known good backup without the virus? I currently manually rename the files by date, but that's getting to be a pain in the ass because I keep several sequential days of backups....on two external HDs. I even started a separate thread about this, but no answers yet.

A response made to Scott on a separate posting.

This issue is worse than I thought.

WinXP Pro, SP3, with two hard drives.
Boot drive 80GB, second HD = 150GB
All Second drive configured as Acronis Secure Zone

I started with an empty archive.
Shut down and booted into F11 Recovery mode
Ran a Bull Backup of Boot drive to Archive on second drive
Validated only newly created file.
Completion screen showed successful backup and validate.
10.41 GB Bytes to back up
7.912GB Bytes backed up
1.3 Comp Ratio
Rebooted into windows and archive was there.
Ran AcronisInfo first time.
See .jpg
Shut down again and performed another backup to a different archive
Ran a Bull Backup of Boot drive to Archive on second drive
Validated only newly created file.
Completion screen showed successful backup and validate.
10.41 GB Bytes to back up
7.912GB Bytes backed up
1.3 Comp Ratio
Rebooted back into windows and now First archive backup file is gone.
Only second backup file appears.
Ran AcronisInfo second time.
see .jpgs.

Hello Gary,

Thank you for the provided information and for the files you have sent to us.

Unfortunately, our QA team failed to reproduce the issue. They requested additional information from you.

We have just officially updated our Acronis Backup & Recovery line of products to the new build under the number of 11345. Please log in to your account on our web site to download the installation file. You can learn more on how to download the latest build here. Please update the program.

After that please recreate Acronis Secure Zone. The main reason of why I am asking you to recreate it is that due to unknown reason our special tool failed to get access to it. This is abnormal, and, most probably, Acronis Secure Zone was created improperly. Therefore, please recreate it by means of the latest build #11345.

After that please try to reproduce the issue. When you create a backup file by Acronis Startup Recovery Manager, please obtain the log file of every backup operation (this possibility is available in the main Acronis Startup Recovery Manager window).

Send them to us.

Also please obtain AcronisInfo file (we need only one file now).

1. Download the file;
2. Run the downloaded file.
The gathered information will be put in adv_report.zip in the same folder, where the AcronisInfo was saved.
Running AcronisInfo may take up to 5 minutes.
Please use the same FTP account and the same credentials to upload the file to our FTP server.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.
Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or if you have any further questions

Thank you.

Received your instructions.
I will download the new build and try to get this done today.
I will turn on full logging for all Acronis activity.
I will send you the files when I have them.

OK, sorry to take so long but I had to try several things to verify my results.
Completely wiped HD2 so it was not formatted or configured at all.
I updated to the new BR10 Build 11345.
Ran several images from Windows and from F11 Recovery.

Everything worked as expected. All my archives were maintained correctly. I did not lose any archive or files after new backups as I had before.

Issue seems to have been fixed.
The screens in build 11345 are different and there are several new features available in build 11345.
It appears that one of these changes fixed my issue!
_______________________________________________________
However I must say I am not happy about losing the Archive File size display from the personal vaults view.
All you show now is the aggregate total of all archives stored.
The last build had the normal display of file size for each individual item in an archive on the right.
I have to look at the individual folder display to verify everything is there.
Last build would show me a file size of 0 so I could quickly identify a failed or missing archive.

I hope you will consider adding that back in with a future update.

I would say to close this issue for now. I will re-report if this should crop up again.
Event though my issue is resolved, I still got the black screen error in AcronisInfo "Failed to execute action (-no_acrlog). after I re-configured HD2.
I sent you the error ,jpg and the AcronisInfo.log if you need the info.

Hello Gary,

Thank you for the good news, I am really glad to hear that the initial issue has been resolved.

About the display of file size. I checked build #11345 of the program, and I can't find the behavior you have mentioned. Could you please provide us with the screen shot of the program window?

If you are not familiar with making screen shots, please read the below step-by-step instructions.

- Get to the window which you want to make a screen shot of;

- Hit the (Alt+)PrintScreen button on your keyboard;

- Run Paint usually available in Start\Programs\Accessories or another graphics application;

- Choose Paste command in Edit menu;

- Save the result picture in JPEG format being preferable.

- Attach the screen shot to your next post.

Please mark by the red color the respective item.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Please let me know if the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question.

Thank you.

I have attached .jpg screen shots showing what I was talking about.
Open Acronis
Click on Vaults View at upper left
Click on Personal Vaults
Click on Secure Zone Vault

Middle of screen shows A list of Archives in the Secure Zone Vault.
There is an overall Vault file size and a graphic display showing how much of the secure zone is used.

There used to be several additional fields off the right side of screen you could scroll to see.
One of these was the file size for the archive and for the individual files held in the archive.

Now when I click on the double right-pointing bracket icon at upper right of Archive listing window I get a button with two red X's stating "All Archives will be deleted".

If the file sizes are still listed to the right off-screen there is no way to scroll right anymore.

See attached pics for screen shots.

Hello Gary,

Thank you for the clarification.

Could you please create a simple personal vault (not Acronis Secure Zone) and check if the file size is available for it? Have you applied the installation from the scratch or have you installed build #11345 over the previous one? I am sending FTP credentials via PMs (the old account has been expired), please upload the sysinfo file with the latest build onto it.

- Open Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information;
- Choose the "Save" option in the "File" menu (or "Action" menu under Windows 2000), enter the "File name" and set the field "Save as type" to "System Information File (*.NFO)";
- Send us the saved file.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Hi Gary,
