backup files larger than backups / archives in management console

Thread needs solution

dear everybody,

i have the following issue and couldn't find a related forum / kb article. i'm actually not sure, if this is a bug or expected behaviour. i have attached some screenshots for diagnosis.

product: acronis backup & recovery 10 Update 5
build: 10.0.13762

setup:
i have a single backup policy on the management server applied to two physical machines with a towers of hanoi scheme (9 levels; rollback 4 months, 1 week, 1 day, 128 sets). the backups are written to a central depot on a storage node. thus each machine has one archive on the storage node. an encryption is set up.
the installation of the management server and storage node is older than the above backup setup. however i had deleted the old depot and backup policy before setting up this backup in march this year.

(potential) error:
the management console shows me the sizes 51,64GB and 73,23GB for the two backup archives (124, 87GB in total). however windows shows me that 435GB are occupied by the .tib files located in the depot. also the management console tells me that 124,9GB are occupied by the central depot, but the archive size is (taller!!!) 451,5GB.

comment:
actually i created this new central deport and backup policy because the old grand-fahter-son scheme had the same problem: the size of the .tib files was significantly larger than the actual backup(s) / archives shown in the management console.

can you explain this? is this expected behaviour of arconis or a bug? can i take any meassures?

best regards
markus

Hello,

Sorry for the late response.

Could you please clarify if the amount of backups in the console corresponds with the actual number of TIB files (112 in your screen-shot) on the disk? The most probable cause of the problem is that the files are not being deleted from the disk after they are removed from the depot meta-data.

Also, could you please clarify what type of depot this is (managed, unmanaged, deduped etc.) and what the actual storage location is (NAS, SAN, USB)?

Thank you.

hi igor,

thanks a lot for your answer. i'm really happy.

1. correspondance of amount of backup with amount of .tib files
both amounts do NOT correspond, but have lost touch completely. at the momen there are 147 *.tib files in the subfolders of the root folder of the depot, while in the console only 16 backups in total (8 for every of two servers) appear.

2. depot
- managed depot
- depot is located on storage node
- deduplication is turned off for the depot
- AES192 encryption is activated
- depot also shows 16 backups in console by the way
- storage is an internal non-removable SATA disk with a NTFS partition (849GB)

you seem to be right, it seems like no *.tib files get deleted at all. i have just checked the file access. the storage node service runs in the context of a domain admin account and a single spot check of mine led to the result that the account has full access to the particular .tib file.

please let me know, if you need any more information. do you have an idea in regards to a solution?

best regards
markus

Hi Markus,
it seems to be an issue in the product. Since it is an old version which is not developed anymore, I'm afraid we won't be able to conduct a proper investigation.
I would recommend consider upgrading to the latest product version.
You can download the trial version of Acronis Backup http://www.acronis.com/en-us/business/backup/ or Acronis Backup Advanced http://www.acronis.com/en-us/business/backup-advanced/ and make sure that it solves the problem.
If the problem persists in the newest version too, please contact our support and we'll investigate the situation.
Thank you for your understanding!
