Backup process hangs at locking partition and throws up errors

Thread needs solution

Hi we use Acronis Backup and Recovery 11 to make system images of hard drives connected to USB adapters. We have two different USB adapters and no matter which one we use the same error occurs.

We start a backup and it begins just fine but then it usually gets to 20% and then it sits there for some time doing nothing, the read indicators on the adapters dont indicate any activity, eventually it begins to say that it cannot communicate with the drive and has read errors. I try to continue and it cannot I eventually have to hit ignore all. This is happening on approximately 80% of the backup attempts we have made. Sometimes Ignore all works and it creates a usable backup most of the time it does not and it will create a backup of something around 250mb for drives with several gigs of data.

we have tried running Chkdsk /f/r on several drives and there was no change, we have also attempted to run it on brand new hard drives to make user images for backup purposes and it does the same thing. The drives are primarily SATA but we have had the same luck with IDE drives.

The current configuration of the PC we use for backups is

64 bit Windows 7 professional
intel core i3 2120 @ 3.3 ghz
8gbs of memory (ddr3)

Any help with resolving this would be greatly appreciated it has become a significant issue and consumes a great deal more time than we would like to do a simple backup.

Let me know if there is anything else you guys need

Hello Lenny,

Thank you for posting and welcome to the Forum.

I would really appreciate the following report collected from the affected machine so that I can study the program logs. The report will show the errors that you are getting during backup failure.

In addition, please let me know during which dates you experienced this issue so that I can check the appropriate logs. Are the USB drives connected directly or through a hub?

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Make sure you're not in a USB 3.0 port. (you wouldnt reach the speed benefits from it anyways)

Also make sure your drivers for your USB are up to date.
