Backup & Recovery 11.0 backup success but with Error (code 8 and 65520)
Hi all,
I am just install a Backup & Recovery 11.0 Server version in my MS windows 2008R2 64bits server.
I am using IBM X-series server, backup Disk1 (IBM partition, C: and D: driver) only.
But, the backup log had a error every time after success. I cannot found any information of this
error in internet. Someone can help me, thanks.

Not happy that anyone else is having problems, but I am glad to hear that we are not unique. I am also getting this on our IBM xSeries 3690 x5 server with Windows 2008r2 Enterprise. This is after installing 11.0.17440.
This is happening on several servers.
Thank you for looking into this immediately.

Hi Helen and Tommy
I have not personally seen this error before but as you both have IBM xSeries and running 2008R2 there might be a common reason between your two sites.
I would strongly suggest contacting Acronis support as per Peter's reply above. The Acronis forum is not really an official place for support from Acronis but rather a community that can share and help each other out. It's good to have a forum post and often can help quickly but I would get onto Acronis support to start looking into this issue as well so you have both options available. Also if support manages to locate the issue please post the findings to help others in the future.
All the best and hope you manage to get it sorted out shortly.

Hi all,
My Acronis version is 11.0.17440 already, so, I just can waiting Acronis support team or can I downgrade the version ?
- Log in to post comments

Judging on information from internal resources is seems that it occurs on UEFI-based systems, if platform firmware doesn't return BootCurrent variable value to the live OS, then it's considered not implementing UEFI specification properly.
In this case other method is used to detect currently booted OS, but this is severe enough to log this fact as a warning. This warning occurs in build 17437 too, so downgrading may not help.

Hi all,
If I skip this warning. Can I restore the WHOLE backup (with system) to the original Server ? That can run ?

This warning should not affect your ability to restore. However if you didn't perform a test recovery (may be to a virtual machine ) it's a good idea to do so.

Fedor,
Unfortunately, I beg to differ. I have had case(s) open with Acronis Support since October 2011 regarding recovering UEFI systems to dissimilar hardware. I even opened a separate Acronis case for this. The prior versions did not report the warning, but the 6 systems IBM systems with UEFI did NOT recover to dissimilar hardware during our DR test in Philadelphia. For the entire time, Acronis support stated that they had never heard of this issue and could not re-create the problem. Now that there is a warning... it demonstrates that there is really a problem that needs to be addressed.
This is so important to get researched and resolved. We are about to upgrade to 11.5... but I am doubtful that this will correct the issue...even though our salesrep thinks that we need to do that. We have so many hours clocked at installing and upgrading in a year's time that it is really disapointing.

Hi Datastore Australia!
Thanks for your input.
Believe you, me! I have opened a case with Acronis support for just this warnin message. (This doesn't count the year-long support requests for unsuccessful recoveries to dissimilar hardware) In prior versions, it didn't report the warning, it just didn't recover to dissimilar hardware at all. We need to recover to dissimilar hardware for our annual 24 hour DR test. Last year it was unsuccessful because we could not recover to dissimilar hardware. Acronis support has been worthless with this issue. They made it appear that we were doing something incorrectly...even though we were successful with other SAP and non-SAP recoveries.
We spent nearly 12 hours on the phone with support during our test, to no avail. We had Windows experts try to find the boot partition using Windows recovery manager. Nothing worked. I am convince that there has to be something with IBM and UEFI that hasn't been addressed in their product.

I have had case(s) open with Acronis Support since October 2011 regarding recovering UEFI systems to dissimilar hardware.
If it is still not resolved with this particular hardware, I'd recommend to perform a test in a most clean evironment - take a fresh server in factory state, take a backup from a bootable media, restore the backup to a new virtual machine 'as a set of files', e.g. of vmware workstation type. If it doesn't work (fails to boot), this may be reproduced on Acronis side using exact this archive that doesn't contain any conpany's information.

Honestly, don't you think that this is rediculous? This is not how we take our offline backups. Acronis has sold us that their software is able to create images from running Windows systems. We purchased Universal Restore to be able to recover to dissimilar hardware, not VMs. Until now, Acronis has stated that there is no reason why this shouldn't work. Now you are defying everything that your product states it can handle. Why would I ever want to use this as an enterprise DR application, if I have to take the images from a boot cd and only restore them to virtual guests?
Acronis has the hardware specifications, they should be able to reproduce this in their labs. IBM xSeries x5 hardware is mainstream server hardware that Acronis needs to test and validate, wouldn't you agree? It isn't some off-brand or one-of-akind hardware configuration. It is as shipped by IBM.

That is not good news Tommy!
I did a quick search on UEFI online and it does seem others are also having a number of issues with UEFI systems from IBM/Lenovo (could be others as well but I admit I was searching specifically for IBM in this case). There seems to be a fair amount of comments saying it has not been implemented correctly from IBM/Lenovo, how true these statements are I have no idea and I'll be honest I don't know much about the workings and implementation of UEFI. The interesting part though is I noticed in forums, most of the complaints are guys installing and using Linux.
Reasion I find this interesting is the default ABR boot CD is based on Linux, now I admit this is a stab in the dark but wanted to mention it just in case it might help some of you... Has any one tried using the Acronis WinPE boot CD for a test recovery to see if they still have issues during recovery?
I'm also sure this has been done or tried but again wanted to make sure, is there any firmware/updates available for the IBM hardware (eg, Firmware, BMC, BIOS, FRU that IBM might now be reporting the Boot Entry ID so Acronis can know what mode the system is currently set to?)
Sorry if this is not much help, I don't mean to inflame an ongoing issue but just wanted to offer a couple suggestions as I understand how frustrating it can be when things don't go to plan.
Another point of interest to me was once you have your backup file, I would think you can recover this to any system and the backup file itself should not be an issue... I'm wondering if the real issue is related to the recovery and due to the fact the Boot Entry is not being reported so Acronis does not know what format to recover the image in (eg, BIOS or UEFI system as they are very different in it's requirements)
What made me think of this is the question about recovering the image to a VM above. I have a feeling this might actually work but am very interested to know the answer to this... I'm also wondering if you will be able to recover the image to another physical system/server that does not have the same issue in that the Boot Entry ID is being reported
For example if you take your server image and try to recover it to other physical hardware (but not an IBM if possible) does the image restore and work ok? The more I'm reading about this I'm starting the think the issue is due to the recovery and the warning during the backup is only a warning and nothing to be concerned about from a backup point; however during a recover this warning becomes critical as the Boot Entry ID seems to dictate how Acronis needs to recover the backup so becomes very important during recovery but should not be a deal breaker during a backup.
Again the above is speculation and me thinking out aloud in case it can help narrow down the issue... The above would explain why Acronis might not be able to reproduce the issues as they will need a physical system or same physical hardware to perform the recovery with to get the same issues and if testing with other physical server and recovering to VM's which also uses UR it might work 100% as expected?
If any one is able to confirm the thoughts above it might help Acronis focus in on the recovery hardware missing ID being critical to this issue and help them find the cause and either see if there is away around it and if not perhaps IBM might need to update the UEFI firmware (not sure how easy or fast this will happen but at least we will all know reasons and answers to this issue)
Sorry for the long reply, hopefully something above might help identify the root issue or spark an idea to help get this issue sorted out for you all...
Best of luck!

Hello Michael,
the message you receive is not an error, but a warning. Ad according to our database it means that your system is not fully UEFI compliant.
The backups themselves should be successful and there shouldn't be any issues restoring them.
However, it is always recommended to validate an archive or to perform a test recovery.
Thank you.
