Backup Storage Node Content

Thread needs solution

Hi,

at the moment I update our environment to B&R 10 and I found the feature "Storage Node". In the manual sounds like the old "Acronis Backup Server". I really love the idea of managing the backup files in the way the Acronis Backup Server did it.

But there was one requirement that prevent me for using this. We run every weekend full backups of our servers. At Sunday evening we copy all the backup files to tape with a third party backup software. This software controls the tape library.

Because of this I can't use the tape feature of the Acronis Backup Server (or Storage Node). The Acronis Backup Server didn't support backup of the content with third party products. Or more precisely Acronis Backup Server didn't support the restore of the content with third party products. So there was no change to combine the benefit of managing the backup files with our requirement of copy the backup files on tape with the third party software.

Is there something new in B&R 10 - Storage Node? Is it possible to backup and restore the content of the Storage Node with a third party product? Would the Storage Node accept restored content?

Hello Carl Robert Anders,

Thank you very much for your question. I will be happy to assist you.

Theoretically, it would be possible to extract the backups from the managed centralized vault controlled by the Acronis Storage Node. The backup files are stored in .tib format, unlike the Acronis Backup Server, which stored the backups as files with GUID names.

However, there can be a little problem with this. If you are simply planning to store the .tib files on your tapes, that is not a problem at all, but if you are thinking of restoring the .tib files from tape, with Acronis Backup and Recovery 10, there could be issues.

Acronis software uses a special algorithm to write backups to tape and to restore them from tape as well. If the backups were placed to tape using third-party software, then there can be an issue restoring them from there with Acronis. You can get around this of course, if you move the .tib files and place them to any other location like a hard disk, network share etc and after that restore them.

You can also create a centralized managed vault on tape, and store the backups directly to it. I can recommend to check the following article in our Knowledge Base, that deals exclusively with tape support in Acronis Backup and Recovery 10.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
