Backup an XP PC and restore all programs and files to a new Win 7 PC

Thread needs solution

I am looking to backup an XP PC and restore all the programs and files to a new Windows 7 PC. Is this possible? If so I would really appreciate someone explaining how to do this. I have Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 w/ universal restore.

Hello Kyle!

Thank you for your question!

You can surely backup and restore the data from XP to Windows 7, but I regret to inform you that it is impossible to perform the same operation with the programs due to the difference in architecture of these OSes. Application programs have to be installed using its installation routine in Windows in order to write various configuration settings to the registry and to setup configuration files in the proper place.

Thank you!

I noticed that Acronis 2010 holds out the possibility of restoring backups to a machine with different hardware than the machine on which the backup was created. How might that apply to the problem cited by Kyle?

Thanks!

Hello mikeyr,

Thank you for your question. I will definitely assist you.

The Acronis True Image 2010 Home Plus pack would apply to Kyle in this scenario.

He created a partition backup of his Windows XP operating system and purchased a new computer with different hardware. He can then use the Plus Pack to restore the backup to the new computer. I can recommend this Knowledge Base article that explains how the Plus Pack can be used in Kyle's case.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
