Hey all,

I'm trying to find information on how to do a backup of the os etc and exchange dbases so I can do a bare bones restore if I have to to using acroins backup and recovery 10 and the acroins exchange recovery agent. I confused on the timing of the backup of the os etc with the backup of the exchange dbases. Can someone that is doing this please shed some light on this for me.

Thank you for your question, I will be glad to help you with it!

In case you need to backup Server OS with the Exchange Database on it - and recover onto the dissimilar hardware, you will need Acronis Backup and Recovery Server for Windows.

Acronis Backup and Recovery Server for Windows can surely backup the Exchange Database, but only with the entire system, and no brick-level backup is available. You will need to suspend the services of the database for the moment of creation of snapshot (2-3 seconds), and you can do it here: 

Set Options Manually -> Database Support

and either enable VSS or use the batch files for suspending the services. You can find more information regarding this function in the User's Guide, chapter 3.3.1.4. I would also advise you to take a look at the examples of batch files in this KB article at the bottom of the page.

In order to recover onto the bare bones machine you will need to create Acronis Bootable Rescue Media. It can be either a USB stick, CD/DVD, PXE, etc., but we usually recommend to use the CD.

You can create it either by going to Tools -> Create Bootable Rescue Media in the main menu of the product or by downloading the *.iso file from your account here as shown on the screenshot. If you are not familiar with *.iso burning, please kindly refer to this article.

In case you need to perform the recovery onto the dissimilar hardware, you will need to add the drivers during the process of recovery in order to make your system bootable. For this you will need Acronis Universal Restore. Acronis Universal Restore is a special add-on and it can be purchased with the license of Acronis Backup and Recovery Server for Windows. I would advise you to take a look at the chapter 6.3.9 in the respective User's Guide and also at the detailed Guide with the step by step screenshots.
