Cannot boot except with Acronis Recovery CD

Thread needs solution

I made a True Image bootable CD using "Tools & Utilities > Create Bootable Rescue Media." I booted with and without it, did some file backups and recoveries which worked and then attempted cloning my primary drive to a second internal HD. The cloning operation failed.*

Now I am unable to boot EXCEPT with that CD. I have changed the BIOS boot device sequence to several combinations; I have used the TI 2010 installation file to repair the installation, then used it to remove True Image entirely and reinstall it.

AT each stage of the above, when I attempt to boot without the TI CD in place, I get a message "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. Inserting the disk and hitting enter produces no change; I have to insert the CD and hit the reset button on the machine.

*Separate post on that issue since It's not clear they are related; see Post "Clone Disk" gives error "failed to prepare...error code 9...extended code 458,780"

I'm running the trial version of True Image 2010 with intent to purchase once I'm sure I can figure it out.

Hello Walter,

Thank you for your interst in [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

First of all, I would recommend you to perform the FixMBR operation.

You can repair the MBR (Master Boot Record) of the hard disk using one of the following methods:

1. Boot from Installation Disc (CD) into Recovery Console and run "fixmbr" command.

2. If you experience problems using the above solution, then please download special Acronis utility from here. Use it to create a floppy and boot the machine from the floppy.

If you prefer to a fix MBR using a CD, then please download special Acronis utility from here. Use it to create a CD and boot the machine from the CD.

You can find more information on how to burn an ISO image to a CD here:

The MBR will be rewritten once you boot the computer from the created media and confirm that you want to fix the MBR.

Thank you.

All good advice and should have worked for me. But I seem to have a catch 22.

I always back up my Win XP C: and D: drives to E w/Acronis TEH 2010 every other day. I keep about three series of backups and incrementals. A few days ago, XP stopped booting ("disk boot failure.") I am not sure what caused it. Restoring from my last C: backup and MBR did not improve things, but I did discover I could boot from the Acronis CD, then let Acronis boot windows. (I later tried to restore from older backups but every one of them seemed to be missing an incremental file.)

So I downloaded FixMBR, burned it to CD, and replaced the MBR. Oops. It booted, but I had reassigned hard drive One to C: and D: while drive Two was E:. FixMBR made One C: and E: And one more thing: When I booted the repaired MBR, XP suddenly found a new device (unnamed and described) and try as I might, I could not stop it from installing. Once "installed," the system could not be booted without using FixMBR again.

So I booted XP via Acronis, reassigned the drives, and am running a backup. How do I get my MBR back to normal? If I were to boot now w/o the Acronis CD, XP would install a new device and destroy my work.
