Cannot Mount TIB

Thread needs solution

When i try to mount a TIB file on my computer, i get an error message that says "There are no drive letters available. Free up a letter and try again."

I have checked and re-checked that i have available drive letters on my machine, this error message came up out of the blue. I tried updating to a later build, and then reverted back to an older build for other features that were removed in later builds. I still cannot mount a TIB. I know that the build is not the issue, because i have it working on a different machine without issue. No other program has trouble with drive letters on my machine, and i can add and remove and change drive letters locally as i need.

Does anyone have a clue what may be causing this?

I saw this issue brought up before in October 2011:

But there is no resolution listed.

Hello Herb,

Thank you for posting this question.

When mounting a backup archive, the product tries to assign a drive letter. Valid drive letters are from C: to Z:. Please check, if you have mapped drives in your system. You can see this by open your windows explorer and see at the left navigation tree all your physical, changeable and mapped drives.

At least free one up, for e.g. unplug an USB drive or stick. to become able to mount your backup archive.

There is another way to get access to your backup archive. Open your windows explorer and navigate to the physical location, where the requested TIB file is stored and open it by double-clicking on it. It will be opened, like you know from compressed archives. Then you can navigate inside the backup, like you do it when mounting it.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

I can see that there are several drive letters free. I know this because i have used tools to check the status of all drive letters. I can also assign drive letters to new devices that i attach.

There are only a handful of devices attached to my computer and they have not changed since before the problem came up (also most of them are internal devices).

So i know that the issue cannot be related to an actual lack of drive letters. My assumption is that Acronis is looking somewhere that is corrupt or inaccessible. Either that or it has its own file that it uses to keep track of the available drive letters. Is there anything like that which you know of?

With regard to browsing the TIB. I can browse the files just fine, what i want is to mount the TIB so i can copy files using a program like xcopy (which cannot do this from a TIB directly). I know several workarounds to get data out of the TIB, but i do this fairly often and would like to resolve the issue at the root.

Thank you for your time and help.

Hello Herb,

I am glad to hear, that you can recover your data using other methods.

In the other thread, I read about build 17318, what is really not the latest available. If not already done, I suggest to update to latest build 17440. You can download this from your account.

If your issue then is not solved, I suggest to contact Support with your recovery issue. You will find more information in our Customer Handbook.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
