Can't restore system state
I am running True Image 11 (latest build) on a Windows XP system (with all the latest service packs and patches). I am trying to restore a system state backup that's stored on an external USB drive. I boot from the Acronis bootable CD I made, it see's the external drive but when I try to restore the system state backup it gives me the following error, "Backups of this type cannot be restored from a removable media." What?????? Where else am I supposed to restore from if my C drive won't boot?
Any thoughts, suggestions, or answers?
Thanks in advance!!!

What is the point of doing a system state backup then? The whole idea is that my system won't boot for some reason (but my data is OK) so I would boot from the bootable media and restore the system backup files from my external hard drive. If I can't do that, why would I ever do a system state backup? When could I ever restore it?

Hello Mike,
Thank you for your response.
The term System state wasn't devised by Acronis company.
The system-protected files only change if you install a service pack or application, or upgrade your operating system. Typically, the system-protected files represent a very large portion of System State data—the default, including the protected files, is about 180 MB. Include these system-protected files only if new programs have been installed. Otherwise, a restore causes the new application to fail.
Backup of System state can be used as a part of the entire backup policy only, you should have a partition backup for more safety. If restore of System state fails, you should perform restore of the entire partitions, but you will lose the data files that are not included into the backup.
Please see this article for more information.
Thank you.

I sent in a support request a week ago. No reply so far, so I'll put it in here too:
I'm running the latest TI 2010 home build on a 64 bit Vista Ultimate machine.
My backups are on an external eSATA HDD.
My system state is backed up every day (scheduled). It completes successfully every time and I know I have it backed up (No incrementals, just a new backup every day).
I had a problem and tried to restore system state, but got a VERY strange error message that says Windows is not compatible with this archive... I'm attaching (here too) a screen shot of this message.
May be someone here will be able to show me what's wrong or why an archive made under a system, is not compatible with the system under which it was successfully made ???

Oh well....
5 days here, 14 days since my email for support... I think it is enough by any standard to understand I'm not going to get any answer (or even the curtsy of saying "We don't want to get into this").
Subject closed as far as I'm concerned. So will my CC be.
For any further communication, there's my email. I'm off from here.
