Confusion Over What Drivers to Add to Recovery Disc

Thread needs solution

I have a little bit of confusion over what drivers I need to add to the recovery disc. Suppose I have a backup of a system running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The machine dies and I'm going to restore to another machine that has different hardware. I have Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 Workstation with the Universal Restore option. My backups are on a network share.

If I create a WinPE based boot disc, I know that I should make sure that I add any network drivers that might be needed on the new machine so that I can access my backups over the network. Also, since WinPE is a32-bit environment I should be loading the 32-bit network drivers.

The part that I'm confused is this: Let's say that the machine I'm restoring to has a disk controller or a chipset for which Backup and Restore doesn't have a driver. Should I also be loading the 64-bit drivers for those items into Backup and Recovery since the OS I'm restoring is 64 bit? Can Universal Restore handle 64-bit drivers or will that present any problems since WinPE is 32-bit?

Any help appreciated!

Hello Hannes!

Welcome to our Forum, we're glad to greet you here! I understand your concern, and will be glad to help you.

Actually Acronis Universal Restore allows you to point him on the drivers, and he adds them. During the restoration you should add the drivers only for mass storage devices (RAID controller, chipset, etc.), all plug and play device drivers should be added after the restoration finished and machine is booted up (NIC, video, sound).

You can find more details about the restoration process process in this Guide with step-by-step screenshots.

Thank you!

Thank you for the Clarification. Now I understand - I only need to load those drivers on my custom recovery disc needed for the 32-bit recovery environment to access my backup. Then, if Universal Restore determines that other drivers are needed by the system to which I am restoring the image, it will prompt me to supply those drivers.

Thank you for the clarification. I do appreciate it.
