Creating a Backup Plan

Thread needs solution

I am new to Acronis and even though I am an experienced user I am not sure how to set up a viable backup plan.

What I want to do is create a full disk backup using my DVD drive and then do a weekly differential backup.

I create a boot disk and did a full backup but am not sure how to set up the differential one.

I thought I had it set up but it asked fro a new DVD after 12% complete. Since the full backup only needed 4 DVD's there was obviously something wrong so I cancelled it.

I created a new backup and it is almost complete but it is using 3 DVD's so it is hard to believe that it is really a differential backup.

So here are the things I don't understand.

1. What should I select to backup for both the full and differentail backup? Should I only select my C drive? I also have a FAT16 partition, NTFS Recovery and the Acronis Secure Zone.

2. Should the differential backup update an existing archive or create a new archive?

Hello Larry,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help. Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.
You are unable to create a differential backup file on DVD disks using Acronis Bootable Media. All your attempts to create a differential backup file created a full backup file. Acronis Bootable Media doesn't have the database that stores the information about the sectors that were included into the full backup. Since the full backup file was placed to DVD disks, the program didn't have the archive at hand and was unable to identify the changes implemented for the source system.
You should perform the operation from within Windows, or, if you want to use Acronis Bootable Media anyway, save the archives locally and burn them to DVD disks using any burning software.
You should create an image set with the archive splitting size at 2 GB on a local hard disk drive and then to copy the created image archives to DVDs. In this case you will have to copy all the archives back to one folder to restore the image.
Please note that once a full image is created as one consistent file it instantly becomes indivisible and in case it exceeds the limit of 4.7 GB (the maximum capacity of a DVD disc) you will not be able to divide it into parts and burn to DVDs. So when creating an image you should bear in mind where you want to store the image to.
However we would recommend you to set the archive splitting size manually if you are planning to transfer an image archive to DVD discs. The archive size should be set at 2 GB to avoid possible discrepancies when being restored later. This proviso relates to most of the modern DVD-writing software.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.
