Creating an image of a laptop running Win 2008 and restoring it to a similar or different hardware

I have this laptop that runs Win 2008 Server with Hyper-V. It has lots of other Hyper-V images in it and basically it is used as a lab server wherein multiple Microsoft server OS and apps are running. NOW, I need to make an image out of laptop and either

1)Restore it on another same laptop(same brand model, etc). I have seen IT do this that they have multiple the same brand/model of laptop and they just install the same ghost image. Not sure how it is done

2)Restore it to a different server hardware like a dsktop or something.

How do I do this? Is TI 2010 with the plus pack, the right software to do this? I just bought them. If not, which one and how do I accomplish what I need?

Thank you for finding time to open the thread regarding this question! I understand your scenario and will be glad to assist you. 

Unfortunately Acronis True Image Home 2010 won't suit your needs: it doesn't support Server OS. For Server 2008 you will need Acronis Backup and Recovery Server for Windows. You can test the solution before making a decision: the trial verion is full functional and has no limitations except:

  • 15 days of work
  • trial bootable media can restore only

You can find all the information about it's functionality in the Installation, Quick Start and User's Guides. 

In case you're going to restore onto the dissimilar hardware you will need to add the drivers for new mass storage devices (chipset, RAID controller, etc.), and for this you will need Acronis Universal Restore add-on. I would advise you to take a look at this Acronis Universal Restore Guide with step-by-step screenshots: it will give you the full picture of the recovery process.
