Email notifications via gmail smtp server fail test

Thread needs solution

Has anyone been able to make email notifications via smtp.gmail.com work with Backup & Recovery 11 latest verstion? I've tried everything including telnet testing ports and the test message always fails to logon to the server. Other applications are sending notifications from the same machine and via the same server no problem.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for your posting! Could you please make sure, that everything is configured properly. Here are the default Gmail SMTP Settings

  • Gmail SMTP server address: smtp.gmail.com
  • Gmail SMTP username: Your full Gmail address (e.g. yourusername@gmail.com)
  • Gmail SMTP password: Your Gmail password
  • Gmail SMTP port (TLS): 587
  • Gmail SMTP port (SSL): 465
  • Gmail SMTP TLS/SSL required: yes

More information here. If you tried configuring your SMTP server on port 465 (with SSL) and port 587 (with TLS), but are still having trouble sending emails, try configuring the SMTP server to use port 25 (with SSL). But make sure SSL is active for SMTP in your email client. Also ensure “allow authentication” is active for the SMTP server in your email client. Check out how to troubleshoot Gmail SMTP Server connection. Before using your Gmail Account as your SMTP server, make sure that you have enabled Gmail POP3 or Gmail IMAP through settings in your Gmail Account.

If the issue persists, could you please attach the full error message and screenshots of the settings in the program.

Thank you,

I finally figured out my problem with sending SMTP through Gmail.  I have 2 step verification turned on in my google account.  Using a regular password will not work in this case.  You have to have google generate an APP onetime password.  Entered that instead of my password and HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY!!!! it worked.  Here is a link for instructions on signing in using an APP Password.   https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833
