"Error occurred while writing the file" during backup

Thread needs solution

I am using the Acronis Backup and Recovery for Linux.

For some reason, when I select to backup Disks/Volumes, the size of the backup is calculcated to be 68.8 GB (when it's really only 3.8 GB). I believe the backup is calculating 68.8 GB by adding up the capacity of each volume, rather than the actual used space.

Next, when I go to back it up onto a DVD, the program begins the backup and after 1%, the backup fails with the error "Error occurred while writing the file."

Anyone know the problem?

Hello Eddie!

Welcome to our Forum, we're glad to greet you here!I completely understand your concern and will be glad to assist you.

Unfortunately it is hard to identify the exact reason for sure due to the lack of sufficient diagnostic information, so this situation requires investigation. Could you please gather the following question:

  1. The build number of the product you're using
  2. OS you're backing up
  3. Linux System Report
  4. Logs from var\lib\Acronis

After that please kindly register the license of the product you're using here and contact support directly with the information attached. Keep in mind that should there be any procrastination with the reply, you can always specify us the case number. We will do our best to speed up the process.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

If I gather this information, would you be able to diagnose the problem through forum posts and not through the link you provided?

1) Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Server for Linux Build 11345 12/01/2009

2) Linux Redhat 4

3) I will provide this if completely necessary.

4) There are no logs here. There is not even the Acronis folder.

Hello Eddie,

Thank you for responding.

We will do our best to troubleshoot the problem from the provided logs, but if the issue cannot be resolved, then the best approach would be to contact our support directly, as Yana mentioned in her post.

For the first issue with the wrong capacity, I can suggest to perform a shutdown -rF now, this will reboot the machine and check the file system for errors.

As for the other issue, from my experience it requires additional investigation. As a workaround, I can suggest to create a backup plan and in the backup options you can select Backup splitting and split the backup so that the files can fit onto a DVD. Please check this screenshot for details. After that, you can use another third party software to copy the backup files to DVDs.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

I have Acronis True Home Image 2011 with Plus-Pack installed. I did not have any problems with ATHI-2010, but when I went to ATHI-2011 I cannot back up "anything". Whether it's a system partition, or just a regular Data Partition, within a minute of starting any backup, I get a message which tells me "Error occurred while writing the file". There's no further data, or error message number, or anything else in the way of a description of the error. The Disk I am trying to write my backups to is 500GB, and has no other data of any kind on it... and it'a almost empty.
I have tried writing test files to this backup disk and those files write just fine. My platform is Windows-7 (64-bit), 3.12GHz Dual-Core processor.
Without any error message number, or descripton of the type of failure, I am stuck trying to get this resolved. HELP Please..??? Ray Flade

One other thought to the above comments, the large capacity Harddrive I'm trying to use for my backups is a 1-TB drive, partitioned into "2" partitions of 500GB each. One of those 500GB partitions is where I'm trying to store my backups.. When I installed this harddrive, I noticed that it indicated it was a "BTI" formatted drive. Because of that, I purchased the Acronis "Plus-Pack" because it needs it for "BTI" format drives. All my other drives are MBR formatted drives. Would this have any bearing on my errors..?? Thanks, Ray Flade
