Extremely slow install of Acronis B&R Advanced Workstation.

Thread needs solution

5 installs of B&R all without incident, but my lastest SOTA (state of the art) workstation (Windows 7 64 bit, 6gb RAM, i7 950 intel process, and SSD) installs Acronis B&R at a snails pace. I have tried this with every version since B&R's release. From the time I click on the installer until the install screen appears is at least 15 minutes. Install goes without incident, but takes an additional 30 minutes. During the install process all network browsing and Internet access is not available, somehow the install is able to contact the License Server on the SBS server. When the process is over network function returns. I have CPU and Network monitoring programs which show no excessive demands during this time.

Not only that, but Acronis Managed Machine service fails to start on every 5 machine boots. I have to log onto the Service with a different user name to get it to work (from Acronis Agent, network administrator, to local machine). When Managed Machine fails all network function fails as well.

This problem occurs only on this one machine. I have 16 other programs installed and not one gives me trouble. If I remove B&R (takes about an hour as well with no network access during that time) and install Shadow Protect 4 the install completes in less than a minute. Sadly there are no issues at all with Shadow Protect.

What is going on with the B&R installer? Why would it install like a snail on this Rocket ship computer, and why does the managed machine lose logon information every 5th boot?

Hello Jerry!

Thank you for finding time to open the thread regarding this issue. I completely share your concern, and will do my best to assist you.

There are many possible reasons for this issue, so in order to solve the problem we need to localise one. Please kindly follow the below steps:

  1. Make sure that you've temporary disabled all third party protection software
  2. Clean out the Temp folder. (Start -> Run -> %temp%)

If the issue remains, gather Acronis Info, and MSI log from the problem machine, and contact support directly with the information attached. Keep in mind that should there be any procrastination with the reply, you can always specify us the case number. We will do our best to speed up the process.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Yana,

Thanks for your interest.
I clean out my temp folders regularly, specifically when I have install problems as with Acronis B&R on this machine.
I have install and reinstalled B&R on this machine freshly for every version upgrade. All to no benefit.

Know that all components ultimately install, but the process itself is like installing a 500 mg exe file on a 286 8mhz computer. (this is an i7 Quad operating at 4ghz with 6 gb ram running at 1600, 64 bit windows 7) I do not believe the MSI files will provide much help as each component installs (You could watch 2 sunday NFL football games before the process finishes)

Worse is the unreliablity of the Acronis Managed Machine Service which fails to load on every 4-5 system reboots and errors with a "Logon" error that the user has no rights. This is intolerable. I have relied, and still rely on Acronis for my Server, other workstations and home systems, but I cannot rely on B&R for this workstation. I have installed Shadow Protect which installed in 20 seconds and backs up the workstation at blazing speed. I prefer Acronis as it has always reliably help me restore my system, but I need to not lose network connectivity and constantly reload the Managed Machine Service.

If nohing else works, did you try deoverclock it before install? And I don't even suggest to try it with a fresh windows install (on a spare HDD, for example) with the rest hardware left the same.

Dev,

How much of a deoverclock. The 4ghz is an overclock. I have set the clock to 2.64, and could even cut it down more in the bios. What would you suggest?

If I had no option to contact the support but a spare hard drive, and not as a sulution, but to find a possible cause - spare hdd and a fresh windows install. And extract from the installer and separately install from an .msi only the agent. With a trial key without license server. If it is slow even in this configuration, it either is a bug or has something to do with motherboard and component. If not - see eliminated parts - existing indows with installed software, old hard drive, or something else.

I've tried a remote install same result, but could try a command install just of the msi. If I just use agent I suppose I could connect from my Windows 2003 Server Management Console which functions fine. I have wondered if the License Server could be part of the problem.

Would Agent and a local license still allow the 2003 Server Management Console to connect to the local Windows 7 machine?

1. It looks somewhat related to Windows installer advertisement feature. As I understand Acronis installer launch the server to advertise itself to other Acronis products (probably on network as well).
2. This bloody feature waiting for 30 minutes or so doing nothing at the same time you cannot much on your computer. It even somehow manage to slow down web-browsing 10 times. Neither you can install/uninstall software. As complex packages tend to install something (like MS Office), the user have problem these either.
3. The problem seems to appear only on upgrade/reinstall of Acronis products, not when you install on clean machine.
4. Surprisingly, the virtual machines which running inside the affected host are not slow (including internet)
5. DD has this problem
