FAQ for Acronis Backup and Recovery 10

Thread needs solution

Is there a FAQ on how to install the workstation licenses?

questions like:
1. Does each machine need to have user name and password on the machine that it will be installed on?
2. manual says on XP, file sharing must be off. What about Vista and Windows 7?
3. does av need to be turned off also?

what I am looking for a step-by-step guide to install the client side B&R.

thanks

PS. Manuals have too many pages but they don't have a step-by-step on client side installation.

thanks

1 - you can either create new account for service user, or use the existing one. If you use the existing one, it must be able to log on as this user not only from console. If it has blank password, it's imposible, unless you turn this option off as described here
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc737553(WS.10).aspx
2. Windows 7 doesn't have it at all, so for w7 the answer is 'no'
3. No, unless av prevents installing.

The problem that I have on a Windows XP machine. File and Print sharing is not enabled. I have Windows XP is the firewall. I have pass through a firewall role to open up file and print sharing. When I click through to install AcronisAgentWindows.msi, I get an error message "Installation has failed".

So what do I do?

Return the product?? or what??

It shouldn't take me 15 hours to install this product.

thanks

here is what I have done:

Acronis Backup & Recovery Steps

What is installed?
1. Acronis License Server
2. Acronis Backup & Recovery Management Console
3. Acronis Backup & Recovery Components and Builder

What do I want to do? Install needed files to Windows XP machine which I have (1) disabled Fire & print sharing and (2) open a port for File and print sharing in Window firewall.
The server is a Windows Small Business 2003 server with 5 licenses.
Steps:
1. Use Acronis Back & Recovery Management Console
a. I use Acronis Backup and Recovery 10
b. And Not Manage Local machine
2. Tools
3. Then Install Acronis components
4. Next
5. I have a choice of use (1) use licenses from the following Acronis License server or (2) Use the following trial key. I use item #1 and type in my server name
6. Next
7. Next
8. Specify the location of the component installation file. I have 3 choices: (1) From the registered components, (2) on removable media or (3) In the following location which I is the directory that I extracted all the files. I am using the “registered components”.
9. I get a list of all the registered components. So I highlight the items that I want to install so I have highlighted (1) Acronis Backup & Recovery agent, (2) AB&R Bootable components and (3) AB&R management console.
10. Next
11. I then have 2 choices (1) I will register the component later or (2) register on the management server on the specified machine. I have tried item #2 but Acronis won’t establish connection to the server so I use item #1.
12. Next
13. I now have a choice to (1) Select machines on the network; (2) enter machines manually or (3) get the machines from a list. I want to select machines manually.
14. Next
15. Now I see the Windows network. Since the machines are “not in a domain” so I click on the workgroup. I have tried the domain route but this has failed also. So when I click on the workgroup, I see a list of machine names. However, this list is wrong ie several machines don’t show up. One machine showed up 10 minutes ago. I check Windows Explorer and the machine didn’t show up, I rebooted the XP machine. The XP machine can see the shares on the server but the server can’t see the workstation. Weird.
16. The machine has shown up in the list. So now I am stopped.

So how do I continue?

thanks

If remote installation fails, I'd try to install it locally on that XP machine, agent and bootable components only.

ps-
you said that "(2) register on the management server on the specified machine" fails - you didn't say that you have installed Acronis Management Server; It is where managed machines are registered and is not the same as License Server.

(1) Management server will not connect. Error "cannot connect to SQL server using the settings you have specified."

(2) I didn't know that I could have installed just the agent and bootable components. By installing these 2 items, do I give centralize management?

thanks

If you need centralized management, you need to resolve the issue with management server install and this SQL server connection error.
2) - Yes, on the machine that you need to backup you need only agent. Bootable components are for restore onto system volume, and tray monitor is for notifying the user on the machine where agent is running.

I rebuilt the machine and made sure that I was using Acronis SQL connection. I want centralize management.

I can get connection to the workstation but all I get is "installation has failed" error message. Machine is Windows 7 ultimate. I have disabled windows file sharing and windows firewall is allowing the port activity to opened.

What is wrong?

thanks

I am still waiting for a response form my 3/08/2010 post?
or how do I create a windows installer log so other way as I am trying to install the agent to a Windows 7 machine?

thanks

For local installation there is http://kb.acronis.com/content/1639
I have no idea if there is something like it for remote one. But as remote installation has more potential points of failure than local, I'd try to install it locally first.

I can install the agent on a SBS 2003 server. However, I can't install the Windows agent on any other machine, from Win xp and Windows 7. I have tried to install Agent when machine was in a workgroup or a part of a domain. I get installation failure messages. I have tried to install the agent on the XP/Win 7 machines. I get error that the installer can't find the license server. This was done in a domain or workgroup mode. The log file for me only works with I want to install the agent but not when I want to install within the gui.

thanks

Hello all,

Thank you for posting.

David,

Acronis License Server does not accept trial serial numbers. When installing a trial version, do not specify Acronis License Server - put in trial licenses during the installation instead.

The client purchased the SBS edition. It has a license server.
Again I ask, how do I get this to work?
