Files Backup: exclude directory ignored

Thread needs solution

I am using BER Workstation build 11345.

I have a root folder "D:\FileServer\My Documents\" that I want to do a GFS scheme backup for everything except one subfolder. The subfolder "D:\fileServer\My Documents\My Music\" is large and doesn't require the full GFS backup scheme. I am unable to successfully exclude the subfolder.

First I tried using the dialog for configuring what to backup. I selected the main root folder from the GUI, then deselected the subfolder. Backups work fine until I later when I deleted some other subfolder within the tree. After that, all backups fail with a "file not found" error. It's as if the backup created a static list of all the folders to backup and then died when any one of the folders on the list was gone. I don't expect I should have to manually recreate the job every time a subfolder is deleted. So I tried another appraoch.

I then setup the job with the root folder selected (which picks up all subfolders) and nothing deselected. I went into the "Advanced view" and entered strings to exclude the folder. I've tried entering the folder as D:\FileServer\My Documents\My Music\ (including trailing slash) and that didn't exclude anything. I tried adding *.* after the directory name and that didn't work. I tried entering the directory name with no trailing slash and that didn't work either. So the trailing slash appears to have been irrelevant.

How can I successfully exclude a single folder without having to manually recreate the job every time a subfolder is deleted, added, or moved? What I need is unattended backups, that's what I bought the software for.

Hello Jay,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help.

The issue you are experiencing requires a closer investigation. Could you please obtain the below information and send me a  Private Message, I will create an account on our FTP server to upload the files.

1) Could you describe in some words where the source files are located, whether they're on internal, external, or network hard drive?

2) Please obtain AcronisInfo file:

- Download AcronisInfo file ;

- Run the downloaded file. The gathered information will be put in adv_report.zip in the same folder, where the AcronisInfo was saved. Running AcronisInfo may take up to 5 minutes.

3) Could you please create step-by-step screen shots of the backup operation management, when you select the main root folder from the GUI, and then deselect the subfolder. We should have an opportunity to reproduce the issue.

If you are not familiar with making screen shots, please read the below step-by-step instructions.
- Get to the window which you want to make a screen shot of;
- Hit the (Alt+)PrintScreen button on your keyboard;
- Run Paint usually available in Start\Programs\Accessories or another graphics application;
- Choose Paste command in Edit menu;
- Save the result picture in JPEG format being preferable.
Please don't create the screen shots conserning the second way to manage the backup task, the entire description is enough to reproduce it.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.

Thank you.

Was this issue ever resolved? I think I have a related problem:

I excluded some of my photo folders which I had copies of elsewhere, which worked OK.
I later added some additional exclusions, but the next time I ran the backup the new exclusions AND the previous ones were ignored, hugely inflating the size of my backup.

I am running Acronis True Image Home 10

Robin, I don't know if the issue is resolved or not. I sidestepped the issue by moving the folder tree I wanted to exclude to a different location. That way I could just tell it to backup everything.

What it looked like to me is that if you put any exclusions into the backup, the software would then keep a static list of what folders to backup. Any folders added later would then be ignored if they weren't subfolders of something already in the list. That seemed like a recipe for problems, so I just moved the folder as I have just said. Might not be a good solution for your case, but I can't say if the issue is resolved anyways...
