Have I Missed Something or Just Stupid
I purchased the Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 for Workstations w/ Universal Restore. I have two dissimilar PC's and am upgrading to new hardware. From 2004 AMD processor motherboard to a new Core i7 Intel compatible motherboard.
I have installed the original software and the latest upgrade version as of 8/22. I have a spare ATA harddrive to store the backup and recover to the new machine which has a SATA harddrive.
I built a bootable CD using your software and included all of the .inf files I could from the new machines driver CD when prompted.
I am able to create the appropriate Archive on the target harddrive.
I connect the new hard drive and install the bootable CD and power up the new computer. It boots properly to the CD and I proceed to Recover the Archive. In going through the menus I select to use the Acronis Universal Restore.
I select Restore Now.
A new screen appears Task Details: MyRecovery_1
Below that it says Task 1 of 1 Recovery > Running with status bars Task Execution, Recovering and Time Elapsed.
At this point it seems the machine is "hung up". No hard drive light flicker indicating activity, the status bars are not incrementing. No indication that anything is happening !
The new machine has been in this state for at least 1 hour. The original Backup took about 45 minutes.
I have a number of other systems to upgrade to new hardware and am hoping that your software is the answer.
I tried to Cancel this operation earlier and it seemed that it had created a new MBR on the target drive.
Are you trying to uncompress the original Archive on the old drive before transferring it to the new target drive ?
Suggestions ?
thanks

thanks for the reply. The old machine has 2 GB of RAM. New target PC has 3 GB. The old machine backups just fine and creates a viable
archive. Both drives are internal. Both are detected via BIOS on the new machine.
No power glitches that I know of.
I will cancel the operation and see what has happened on the target drive. As I mentioned when I step through the ABR10 software
to Recover the image on the new machine, everything seems in order. I can see the archive and the ABR software sees the new target
drive, so I thought if I had a chipset issue I wouldn't see the new target drive.
Okay....I Canceled out of the operation.
When I look in the Personal Folders I see my C: drive (archive) and D: (target)
When I explode the view on C it has two folders.....one called Meta and the other System Volume
When I explode the System Volume is shows one subdirectory : _restore (with letters and numbers)
Within the _restore subdirectory is another named RP361. It is empty
So basically it seems the original Archive has been umcompressed and no longer exists.
At least my original PC is still functioning and I can work out the bugs. I would hate to have this happen
and lose the data !

Do your disks have disk names? As Acronis use Linux for their rescue environment, disk drive letters are reported differently than in Windows and it is possible to mistakenly try and restore an image to the disk that contains the image - if the drives have labels then it is easier to click on the correct drives.
ABR10/TI use RAM extensively, so one mildly flakey RAM stick can cause problems, but in your case it now sounds as though it somehow tried to restore an image to the archive disk.

thanks Colin. I have the drive with the backup on it labeled Backup. The target drive does not have a label.
I am using Win XP SP3.
I am backing up again w/ validate on to make sure the backup is okay.
I will give the new target drive a label as well to make sure I'm not trying to restore to the Archive.
I don't think so because the two 500GB drives are different model numbers and types. The Archive drive is
an ATA interface and the Target drive is a SATA.
I'll give it a go here in a few minutes.
thanks for your comments !
cheers

An update.....
I ran the Backup on the original machine and it validated. I bought the disk drive to the new machine. Hooked it up and
booted in the BIOS to make sure it was detected. Okay ready to go.
Re-booted into ABR10 bootable CD I created.
I browsed the Vault and found the Archive on the backup drive.
I then tried to Validate it...Now it no longer exists but instead looks as I mentioned earlier with the _restore sub directory .
So I think something is going on with the ABR10 Recovery software. It shouldn't destroy or try to install the Archive on itself
especially when I asked it to validate. Now maybe I misunderstand the Validate but at least I should get a warning or something
and not destroy the original Archive.

Another update......I took the Backup hard drive back to the old PC and the Archive validates immediately without
issue. When I put the Backup hard drive into the new machine there are issues.
The new machine is an Asus P6T2 V2 X58 chipset motherboard.
It appears that there is a driver issue with this motherboard and the ABR10 software. As I mentioned in an earlier
post I have the latest update which I downloaded today.
Validation takes around 5-6 minutes on the old PC. I will try again on the new one.
At least I'm losing weight going up and down the stairs between PC's !
Suggestions are appreicated !!
thanks in advance

Latest update....
I was able to restore the Archive to the new PC. However I was only able to do this without using the Acronis Universal restore. I tried using
it first but it would not work. Also it takes over 5 minutes for the software to detect the SATA target drive.
Okay after I restored the archive to the target drive, I rebooted the machine.
It was stuck on the Windows XP splash screen. I let it set there for at least 30 minutes but no luck booting.
I rebooted into Windows Safe mode and it complained for drives for the hardware. Okay I've done this before using other ghosting
software.
I finally made it through restoring the drivers.
It still will not boot past the Windows splash screen.
I can only boot in safe mode. In Device Manager/Hardware there are no Red or Yellow warnings. I am running the standard IDE
drives. (On my pld PC before I made the backup Archive, I changed the drivers in Device Manager to the standard Windows drivers trying
to avoid hardware conflicts !)
So here I am with a new PC that can only boot in safe mode.
Why doesn't the Universal Restore work ? I thought it was to allow me to restore an image on dissimilar hardware, boot and
be ready to go. In addition when I built the Bootable CD, when prompted, I added every .inf file I could find from the target PC
driver CD.
Suggestions ??

In a nutshell, here is what has happened and I am asking Acronis for their suggestions.
1. Purchased the Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 w/Universal Restore
2. Downloaded the latest revision 11105, I think.
3. Main purpose is to restore an old PC to new hardware
4. Old PC is Asus K8V SE Deluxe Motherboard, 100GB HDD, Win XP3, AMD Processor, 2 GB of RAM
5. Target PC is Asus P6T V2 Intel X58 Chipset i7 Core Processor w/ 3GB of RAM, 500GB SATA HDD
6. Installed ABR10 on Old Machine
7. Created Bootable Media for new machine.
8. Added all of the drives from the P6T V2 Driver CD to the Bootable CD
9. Created an Archive and Validated it on the old PC (Used a blank 500GB ATA HDD Formated w/ ABR10 Disk Management tool)
10. Installed the 500GB in the new PC as Disk 2. Disk 1 is the SATA HDD.
11. Booted the new PC, checked the BIOS so all disks were registered.
12. Put in the Bootable CD with ABR10 w/ Universal Restore
13. Rebooted new machine.
14. Tried to recover to new SATA HDD but would not work w/ Universal Restore. At least the system seemed "hung" with no
indication of activity.
15. Canceled Recovery. Re-Booted PC
16. Tried Recovery again this time w/o Universal Restore.
17. Recovery seemed to work but when machine rebooted is was stuck on WIN XP splash screen
18. Re-booted into Safe Mode
19. Had to re-install many drivers
20. Machine will not boot except into safe more
Could use some suggestions from Acronis on why Universal Restore didn't work. Also I had selected Bare Metal
as an option during recovery.
A shameless BUMP I suppose !
thanks

Hi Mark:
I had a similar issue as yours. I don't think you stated, but I'm guessing your are using the linux recovery disk.
I didn't have the problem after I created a winPE Acronis recovery disk. The WinPE disk uses windows drivers and a bootable windows version that seems to do a much better job of seeing more than one internal hard drive, etc.
Try the "WinPE ISO Builder"... its much better than the basic linux recovery disk.
For an idea on how to 'make' an WinPE recovery disk... check out: kb.acronis.com/content/2766

Hi Matthew and thanks for your response. I don't know if I'm using a Linux recovery disk or not. How would you know ?
I'm using the Bootable Media created from ABR10. Went through all if the steps and added all of the drivers as suggested.
I tried again this morning but the worst part is you don't get any indication anything is happening on the Restore. No status bars,
no indication of any kind that something is happening. When you create an archive you see a task info screen that tells you what
percentage completed and how long ago you started.
In Recovery on the new PC when I tell it to start I see the Task Screen with the status bars and it says Running but after 1hr
I have to Cancel the operation. I then view the target disk and see data and directories but when I try and re-boot, the system
just hangs.
So I was hoping to hear from Acronis as to a solution.
You mention WinPE ISO builder. Why would I do this versus the standard build the bootable media as mentioned in the
users guide ?
Suggestions ??
thanks

The standard rescue environment of all Acronis products is Linux. Sometimes there are driver problems from the Linux point of view, but these normally manifest themselves in being unable to actually start a restore.
It does sound as though you might have a Linux driver problem.
If you could list your PC's chipset and video card, it might ring a bell with someone.

thanks Colin. The target PC is an ASUS P6T V2 Motherboard, Intel X58 chipset, an EVGA GeForce GTX 260 video card. The SATA drive is controlled by the Intel ICH10R southbridge. This is what is controlling the "C" drive or target where I want to restore the Archive from the old PC to. The HDD that contains the Archive is controlled by a Marvell 88SE6111 controller.
I thought that when I made the Acronis Bootable CD I and I was copying all of the .inf files, that was taking care of any driver issues. Apparently not or there is some other issue. The Backup and Recovery software does recognize the SATA target drive on the new PC but the software just hangs. Since the Intel X58 chipset is the latest on the market I would hope the ABR10 software would be able to handle it.
I am getting to the point where I think that my only option left is to do a clean install of Vista on the new PC and look forwards to hours of installing the old software. I have at least 3 PC's in this situation and so Acronis would be my choice of software if I could get it to work properly.
We have used the True Image software at my place of business but just for Backup and Archive, not to install on dissimilar hardware. So I was taking a leap of faith in using the ABR10 Workstation software.
Not really looking forward to clean installs !!

Hello Mark,
Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/ | Acronis Corporate Products]]
I am sending you an ISO file via PMs to create another Acronis Bootable Rescue Media. Please create a new CD and see if the issue remains.
Thank you.

Oleg,
Can not create a bootable disk and also a disk image image from either the 2010net book & the 2010 regular version. I am trying out the sofware with trial software versions. Is there a restriction with the trial software? Otherwise, puzzled? I am a past customer. Please email me specific instructions and appropriate files.

Hello Steve,
Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help. Without additional information I can’t be certain of the issue. However from what you have told me this may be the possible solution.
The trial versions of Acronis True Image Home 2010 and Acronis True Image Home 2010 Netbook Edition have the following limitations:
1) 30-days trial period;
2) The program is completely functional from within Windows.
3) Under Acronis Bootable Rescue Media the recovery is available only.
You are unable to create Acronis Bootable Rescue Media. Does any error message appear?
If you receive something like Device is busy or Poor media quality, you can easily overcome the issue. Please start creating Acronis Bootable Rescue Media and instead of selecting DVD-ROM as a target for the operation choose ISO image at Bootable media type selection window. Save ISO image and burn it using any preferable software. You can learn more ion how to burn an ISO file to a CD disk here.
If you are unable to launch Acronis Media Builder, please make sure that you have selected the complete installation (not the custom or the typical ones). Try to install Acronis Media Builder separately, launch the installation file of the program -> Install Acronis True Image Home -> Custom -> Install Acronis Media Builder.
You mentioned that you are unable to create a disk image. Does any error message appear? Could you please describe in some words the program behavior? Could you please provide us with the log file of the failed operation?
Being that I am the moderator of the forum I am unable to answer you via e-mail. If you prefer to communicate via e-mail please create an e-mail request on this page, under Contact us click on the Start here button and follow the step-by-step guide.
