How to create named backups by date

Thread needs solution

We just installed Acronis 11 on Windows 2000.

The problem is I don't see how to have Acronis create a new "Full" backup file each week where each backup has a different name - say with the date appended to the full backup file name.

As I see it, Acronis just creates a single backup named file and keeps overwriting the same file each time it does a full backup. (???)

We want the multiple backup option so we will have more than one full backup to check for files.

I looked at the user manual and didn't see how to have Acronis 11 create a differently named (say, by date) full backup file each time it backs up.

We'd also like the option to have Acronis overwrite the oldest backup when the disk is full.

How do you set these options?

(Are these options available?)

Thanks in advance.

Ahah you've snucked into the Corporate version forum.

If I recall you can get to near what you want if you use backup locations in TI 11. The files will be auto named though.

With ABR10 and TI 2009 you can do this.

Hello all,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

Jim,

If you want to have a new full backup created every time a scheduled task is run, so that there will be several full backups instead of one, you can use the batch file rename_backup.bat as a pre-command.

This batch file renames a specified file, so that a new file with the same name will not overwrite it. If you schedule a task that regularly creates a full backup, you may use Acronis True Image pre/post commands.

Please see the article [[http://kb.acronis.com/content/1525|Automatically Renaming Image Archives]] on how to set this option.

Thank you.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM (I AM USING VISTA, WITH AN EXTERNAL IOMEGA DRIVE).
MY SOLUTION:START,COMPUTER (SHOWS DRIVES),CLICK ON EXTERNAL DRIVE,
RIGHT CLICK ON ANY EMPTY SPACE AND SELECT "NEW" FROM PULL DOWN MENU,
SELECT "FOLDER" AND RENAME "NEW FOLDER" WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH DATE & ENTER.
THEN WHEN "CREAT NEW BACKUP ARCHIVE" ALLOWS YOU TO BROWSE, FIND THIS NEW FILE AND SELECT IT.
NOT VERY AUTOMATIC, BUT THAT'S THE WAY I DID IT.
PS U WILL HAVE TO DELETE YOUR OLDEST WHEN U RUN OUT OF SPACE.

Jim, you are welcome.

RANDOLPH,

You can automate the procedure if you use the batch file Batch file for managing backup sets saved locally. The batch file provided will allow you to set up a backup retention policy for the backup files saved to a folder on the local drive.

If you want to keep full and no incremental or differential backups you can set the amount of backups in each set to 1 so each set only consists of one full backup. The oldest set will be deleted automatically in accordance with the predefined limit. You can identify the backup files by the time of their creation.

Thank you.

thanks for your try at simplifying , but vista does not go from control panel to scheduled tasks.

also i am unable to find ATI "pre/post commands".

i down loaded "rename.backup" and think i understand the steps but do not know how to execute the resulting series of steps.

i have just purchased your product, and suggest a simple method to do what we are trying to do would be a nice addition to your command structure.

the forum is a nice resource.

Hello RANDOLPH,

Thank you for your response.

We have an article in our Knowledge Base, I should have pointed to it earlier. Please see the article Using batch files in Acronis True Image for more insformation and do not hesitate to ask if you need a further assistance.

Thank you.
