how to recover image from ext HD when WinXP broken? ATI Home 11

Thread needs solution

I can't boot WinXP. I get the error "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

So I tried to boot in WinXP Recovery Console, and got the error: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll"

I have an Acronis Home Edition 11 image of my C: drive on an external hard drive. I want to load the image back onto my C: drive.

So I put in my Acronis True Image 11 Home CD, and I get 4 choices. I click on "Acronis True Image Home(Full Version)" and I get the image of a woman's hands holding a bubble. Then it goes black. Nothing.

Next I tried clicking on "Windows" at the 4 choices window, and I get the same error as the first error above.

I downloaded the full 121 page ATI Home Ed manual. Sect 3.4 talks about "Activate Acronis Startup Recovery Manager". I don't see that option, nor do I see a place to push F11. So I went to Section 6.2. I don't see a "Restore Data Wizard". Section 6.3 says "Launch the Restore Data Wizard". Again, where is this option?

Can someone please tell me how to copy the image on the external HD to the computer's C: drive?

TIA,
Paul

You have to get a working bootable True Image Rescue Cd. If you have access to another computer, install True Image and burn another Rescue CD.

I went to another computer that had Acronis True Image 10 (not 11 like the broken one). I ran ATI 10 and made a CD by using the Bootable Rescue Media Builder (I put the Full Version Acronis True Image Home on the CD). I selected the CD as the Bootable Media Selection (not iso).

So I put this in the broken computer's CD reader and Acronis booted up. I clicked on Acronis True Image Home((Full Version). I then clicked on Activate Acronis Startup Recovery Manager. That program ran, so I clicked Next, and it said "Error E000101F4 Acronis True Image Home has not found any hard disk drives".

Does this mean the hard drive is dead or did I do something wrong?

Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul,
Creating a rescue disk is not a machine-related matter. It is an Acronis version/build matter.
This is why your last attempt did not work.

You don't need to activate the ASRM in order to do a restore.

TI 10 wouldn't restore an image created by TI 11 even if TI 10 did support the computer's hardware. Not finding any drives usually means that the Linux drivers are not supporting the controller.

For TI 11, have you tried the quiet acpi=off noapic option detailed in Section II of the Read Before You Post thread?

If that doesn't work, you could ask Acronis Support for the ISOLINUX version (alternate loader) or try using the TI 2010 trial version.

Hello all,

Thank you very much for all your posts. It will be my pleasure to assist you.

DwnNDrty, Babac and MudCrab,

Thank you very much for your assistance and all of your suggestions are correct.

paul1991,

I would like to send you a download link for the ISOLINUX bootable CD, however, I could not find any serial number of Acronis True Image 11 Home under your Acronis web-account. If you can send me a PM with the serial number, I will be more then happy to send you a download link for it.

In the meantime, I believe MudCrab's suggestion to use a trial version of the ISOLINUX CD for Acronis True Image 2010 Home is the best workaround for now. I will send you a PM with a download link and instructions for burning it.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
