Hyper-V host/guest install pref ? for ABR Virtual Ed.

Thread needs solution

Wondering if you can suggest best method for install-

I have a Hyper-V host (2008r2 SP1, a proliant DL360 G7)) which will be installed at a remote office. It is replacing 2 servers there, one of which I may re-purpose for B2D target (a whopping 350gb), or perhaps a NAS will be obtained.

Shall I install the ABR Virtual ED on the host itself (not recommended by MS) or on a guest, or is it prefered to have a seperate server for ABR Virtual. No dedup planned just simple images is fine.
There will be 2 guests on the HOST
The guest machines will be 'small', a 2008r2 SP1 DC in RO mode (less than 25gb I'm thinking) and a FS that will be 2008r2 SP1 @ 50gb.

Can the target backup disk be a \\ip-address\share$ or \\server_name\share$ ?
Is a SQL server required, or will install use a run-time if desired?
This will be in a corp. network with Domain active, Host is a member server.
Understand there is an agent, where is it installed, host or guest?

Thanks in advance-
Mark

Hello Mark,

Thank you for posting in our forum.

If you have an Hyper-V Host with 2 virtual guests on it, you have several possible ways to install it.

First the 'must have' parts:

  • Acronis Agent for Hyper-V have to be installed on the Hyper-V host.
  • Acronis Storage Node should never be installed on a virtual guest system. Install on a physical machine.

All other components:

  • Acronis Management Console can be installed wherever you want.
  • Acronis Management Server is optional and you can, but do not have to use it. The Acronis Management Server component itself can be installed on a virtual guest system. If you use this component, an MS SQL Server is used.

So, if you want to do a minimal installation, I suggest not to use the Acronis Management Server and so you did not need the Acronis Storage Node component. As a result you only can store into personal vaults. For general information, see our Online Help for Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.

Let me know if you need additional help please.

Thank you.

Thanks, the online help did the trick, see I need a management server and an agent on the HV Host.
When creating the vault, I'm going to create it on the management server, is there the option to create it/point it elsewhere (something like a UNC to a NAS) ?

Hello Mark,

Thank you for your reply.

Of course, you can define your vault anywhere, by using UNC path settings (e.g. \\server\share\folder). See more Information in Online Help.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
