Incremental Backups and Retention Rules

Thread needs solution

Acronis Backup and Recovery 11

I have a routine that runs an incremental backup of critical data every two hours. I have set the retention rule to delete backups older than 2 weeks. I am a little confused how this is going to work with an incremental backup. It is my understanding that in order for an incremental backup to be valid it needs an uninterrupted series of incremental backups back to the original full backup. If I delete backups older than two weeks does this mess this up or does it create a new full backup at this point?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks,
Russell

If there are only incremental backups scheduled after initial full it will not delete anything. If you select 'consolidation' instead of deletion, it will create full backup instead of full incremental and initial full, containing data from these two. Creating this new full may take a considerable time. If you schedule another full to run, say, every three days, retention rules will delete the whole old chain when its latest backup it's older than two weeks.
