Is it possible to restore using Acronis boot media if there is no access to the deduplication database

Thread needs solution

Hi

As I have said above. I was just wondering is it possible to restore from an Acronis boot disk from an archive if the deduplication database is unavailable or perhaps (heaven forbid) if the server the database is located dies and needs replacing.

Is it good practice to copy the database to somewhere else in case this happens?

Many Thanks

Chris Lowers

p.s. just to confirm i am referring to Backup & Recovery 10 here but I'm guessing the answer would be the same for 11?

Hi Chris

My understanding is you will need to have access to both the DB and Image locations to perform a recovery.

If the database is corrupted or the storage node is lost, while the vault retains its contents, the new storage node rescans the vault and re-creates the vault database and then the deduplication database so you can get back up and running again, so your backups will not be lost!

It’s of cause it’s always best to ensure both your DB and images are stored on protected volumes/storage to avoid these kind of issues when possible.

Thanks for this

Does anyone know how long it takes to recreate the database? doe sit need to do the indexing task or could you just recreate the storage node and then restore straight away??

Hi Chris
I believe this will depend on how large your vault is and how much data it needs to go through and re-index. I’m also guessing your CPU/RAM/HDD speeds will also have a big impact on this process and will vary from system to system depending on these factors.

You might like to create a test vault, backup a bit of data. Manually remove the vault but keep the data then re-add the vault but with a new DB folder?

I will see if I can get this testing done as well but this process might give you a better understanding how it all works and ensure it’s working well for you..etc.
