Manually Removing Slices

Thread needs solution

I'm using B&R (trial.. still evaluating) to backup my servers to a 2TB NAS device. Mon - Thurs it doesn an INCREMENTAL and friday a DIFFERENTIAL.

I would also like to copy the FULL and last DIFF to a USB drive to take it off site. Once a week I would like to replace the DIFF on the USB with the latest DIFF from the NAS.

So.. for any given point in time.. I might have something like
FULL BACKUP
--INCR 1
--INCR 2
--INCR 3
--INCR 4
-DIFF1
--INCR 1-1
--INCR 1-2
--INCR 1-3
--INCR 1-4
-DIFF2
--INCR 2-1
--INCR 2-2

and my USB drive will have only the FULL BACKUP and DIFF2.

In testing, of course, when I try to do a restore from the USB drive, It tells me there are missing volumns, but since all the data is in the FULL and DIFF2, then those volumns arn't really used. and skipping them seems to work ok..

The restore seemed to work fine. I just wanted to see if this scenario is a big NO NO and not reliable. The offsite usb drive is only in case of a huge catastrophie, such as the building vanasing from some act-of-god event.

I considered just doing a weekly export/consolidation type procedure, but it seems to take just as long as doing a full backup. Since one of the backups is about 500gb, then it's quite time consuming.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
James

Here's what I decided to do.. My nightly backups run as stated above. My offsite backup just does a DIFF each week on Fridays to an external drive, and I swap the drives on Mondays.

Can someone answer this final question? One of my archives will have the fullbackup tib file at 380GB with several smaller 30gb or so DIFF backups after it. Can I safely delete the DIFF's leaving the full archive and let it do another DIFF? or will the meta file screw it up..

In other words.. after a few months, i might have
FULL 380gb
DIFF1 30gb
DIFF2 32gb
DIFF3 33gb
DIFF4 34gb
DIFF5 36gb

Then to save space, I delete all the diffs. So after the next DIFF backup, i'll be back this..

FULL 380gb
DIFF1 38gb

Thanks,
James

Hello James,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help. Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.
Certainly, you are able to delete the intermediate differential backup files without corruption of the chain integrity. Please note that you should perform this operation from within the program interface, in this case the  meta file will be updated properly.
If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.
