Monthly backup freeze server

Thread needs solution

Hello guys,

I come directly to my problem. Every 4 weeks when the Server wants to make a monthly backup he is hanging. Only a hard reset can get him out of status.

To describe my system. It is a HP Proliant Server with 64 GB RAM and 2 Xeon 12 core CPUs. On this is running a Server 2008 R2 Datacenter and the Hyper-V role. In this Hyper-V role are 9 Server running.
On a separate hardware Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 (Virtual Edition build 11.0.17440) is running. The agent is only installed on the Hyper-V host server. And the backup plans are centralized on the Backup server. He saves the backup on a NAS.

When the server is "frozen" the Server is still up and I can connect with RDP, but I can not run any application. even he is not able to do a shutdown.

This error has already a longer story...now more than 1 year. First problem was that backups was hanging at 75%...solution for this was changing to "fast cataloging" (there the Acronis was installed on the Hyper-V host directly)...after that he started with the frozen system. First try was to move the Acronis to a separate hardware (done...no solution of the problem)...second....changing the NAS...(done...no solution of the problem)...third and last for now was removing the Acronis VSS provider from the Hyper-V host and using the Microsoft VSS provider ( Backup setting...Hardware/Software select automatically)...I was thinking this fix the problem...until I realized this morning that the server is hanging again.

Sorry guys...I need help.

thanks for any answer

Hello Tobias Herrmann,

Thank you for posting this question in our forum. I am happy to assist you.

I apologize for the problems with the product. Please let me repeat the issue in order to ensure, that I have understood it correctly.

You have a Hyper-V host (let it name host), and there you have installed the Agent for Hyper-V.

Then you have another server (let it name AMS), that hosts the Acronis Management Server and the Acronis Storage Node that is writing the backups to a centralized (managed or unmanaged?) vault.

On the host you have 9 virtual guest systems that are backed up.

  • If you run a full backup only once a month, how often you run incremental or differential backups during the month?
  • Are you running a validation of the backup? (entire archive or only last backup?)
  • How many free disk space you have on the host?
  • How many free disk space you have inside the virtual guest systems?
  • Are you backing up all machines within one backup plan?
  • Do you find any error in logs?

I look forward to your reply.

Thank you.

Hi Peter,

sorry for the long long delay, but I was very busy.
The environment is exactly how you described it. Lets come to your questions.

Its a GFS Scheme ... daily(keeping for 7 days)...weekly(keeping for 12 weeks)...and monthly (keeping unlimited)...but all Weeklys runs at different days and all backups runs at different times from 6 PM to 6 AM.
No validation of backup. Setting fast cataloging is enabled.
The host have 30 GB Free C Drive at the moment.
Most of the guests have 100 or more GB free.
Different backup plans.
Yesterday I had again a frozen server... here the error log

Hello Tobias Herrmann,

Thank you for your reply.

Please check on the related machine the Windows event log (eventvwr.exe), if there is any error related to the VSS services. This is the most common reason, if a Hyper-V backup of a guest system fails. You will find more related information in this article from our knowledge base.

If you need additional assistance, please create a system report of the affected machine and contact support. You will find all available support options in our Customer handbook.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi everyone,

We have also this problem on the servers which implemented in Hyper-v. We have this problem every day when the backup schedule starts.
All of the servers freeze when the backup process starts, we can see windows Error logs on these servers and all of them are same as each other , such as : NIC has been disconnected. After the backup process finished, the server backs online.

Description :
1.we make backup from the VMs through Hyper-V extension.
2.We identified weekly full backup and daily incremental backup schedule.
3.High compression is enabled.
4.We have 4TB backup space.
5.There isn't any error logged in Acronis, every thing seems fine in Acronis, but we have so many error loggs in VM's OS (windows server).

This period takes 10 minutes to 30 minutes every time and the keeps the servers down,we want to know why Acronis freezes the VM's?

Your soon reply will be appreciated. . .

Hello Ashkan,

Welcome to Acronis Forums! Here you'll find some known causes for the described behaviour and suggested solutions. Should the issue persist I'd recommend investigating it through a support ticket
