Moving to a different computer and want to make sure everything transitions smoothly.

Thread needs solution

I'm moving Acronis Backup and Recovery 11 (Advanced Workstation) from an old Windows XP machine to a new Windows 7 machine. I am making the new machine the AMS server and the old machine will continue to exist, and be backed up by the new machine. The backups are being stored on an external hard drive connected by USB. I want to know if there are any ways to mack sure the backups can still be used from before the move as well as how to move the backup plan to a new computer. I would also like to know any tips or things I need to do before moving.

Thanks in advance

Moving the AMS and license server can be problematic, when i moved mine, the machines would keep unregistering from the AMS on the new machine and after 30 days, i had all sorts of "no license found" issues. The eventual solution (http://kb.acronis.com/content/8338 fyi the ADM template solution did not work for me in a Windows 2008R2 domain, and this should still apply even though the article is written for ABR10) was to go in and edit the registry settings manually for the license server and AMS to point the machines to the new IP address (on all the clients). This was a while ago with an older build of ABR11, but its definitally something to watch out for.

Moving the backup plans, there is an export button that can be used to save the plans (one at a time) to an xml file, but i would try to import them again to make sure they are viable. (Haven't done this in a while but there used to be an issue with not being able to import the files saved by acronis). Also, make sure your USB drives have the same drive letter mapped to them, or edit the plans to reflect the new ones.

Moving the vaults to the new location shouldn't be too difficult, if its a managed vault then detach from the old machine (through AMS) and the attach the vault on the new one. If its unmanaged, you have to select "create vault" and then select the folder storing your backups. Acronis will search the folder and populate the "new" vault with your archives.

Have fun!
