newbie first time drive restore - different make, model and size

Thread needs solution

I'm having an issue with my 120 GB IDE hard drive in my system.  To make a long story short I can restore my full backup to the hard drive from my TrueImage 2009 full system backup and it will work for a while and fail.  Based on the behavior (no drive activity when it Windows scroll bar is scrolling during startup) that the hard drive is failing and I'm my best course of action is to replace the drive.

My question is this....The exsiting drive is a WD 120 GB IDE drive and I'm wondering what is going to happen if I attempt a restore to a new hard drive that might be from a different manufacturer, a different size and/or perhaps SATA vs IDE?  Will the restore be successful?  If successful what is Acronis going to do with the additional drive space if I put a 250 GB drive in place of the 120?  Will Acronis prompt me as to what I want to do or ignore the space or partition the whole drive as was the case with my existing HD?  Is there any prep work that I need to do with the new drive to make it ready for a restore of this nature?  This is all new to me so I feel like a newbie here.  Any information, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't performed a full restore (for now i can't get the system to correctly preform a backup) but from my experience (I have moved different version of Windows, and Linux with different tools hundreds of times) and knowledge about Windows (I assume you want to move this system) size and producer of the drive don't make any difference.

Everything that really is important is the controller to which this device is attached. If you are moving to a different controller (ie from PATA to SATA) and it (the controller not the drive attached to it) was disabled (in other words installer when the backup was performed) then even if you are able to restore the backup then the system will not boot.

If you are moving within the same computer, and all drive controllers are installed then it is simply possible to just copy a partition from one drive to another. But when doing so it is important to not install the new drive and let windows see it because after copy it will be important to do additional steps to run windows on such device.

Back to Acronis. You should be able to restore the image if its inside the same computer to a different drive with no problems (even on a different controller if it was on during the backup).
