RAID 5 Backup

Thread needs solution

I have a Dell 2600 Server with a Perc/Di4 RAID 5 configuration. I would like to use Disk Director Server 10.0 (have not purchased yet) to expand my C: drive partition (I only have two partitions C: and D: and there is an incredible amount of space on my D partition to give to the C partition. I would like to back up the D: partition (about 10 gigs) on a separate SCSI drive if possible, before I expand the C: partition. The new SCSI drive that I have available is the exact same drive as the other 3 hard drives (75 gigs, 15,000 rpm). There are 6 hard drive slots and 3 are available. Windows 2003 disk management does not recognize the new SCSI drive when I put it in the slot. Rebooting it does not allow it to be recognized either. Is it possible to back up a RAID 5 partition to an independent SCSI?

You need to configure your raid card to recognize the SCSI disk as a new virutal drive. The RAID controller presents the information to Windows. So the new drive needs to be initialized before it is recognized. You can then backup the Raid 5 virtual disk to the new virtual disk.

WARNING: Be careful you to not change the settings for the Virtual RAID 5 when initilizing the new virutal drive.
