Recovery CD Backup and Recovery 10 - fails to read data from Disk Error on backup

Have been using this for a long time but all of a sudden tried to create a backup and it fails with an error about reading data from disk.

I changed the setting in the BIOS from AHCI to IDE and it would not recognize the disk at all. When set to AHCI it does see the disk but gives the same error.

Not sure what is causing the problem, and all my searching has left me with no real answers. The disk is fine, no bad sectors or errors so please don't suggest running a utility against the disk...
