Recovery for Microsoft Exchange
I'm trying out the software and am extremely happy so far, but have some questions / comments in regard to backing up and restoring from an FTP Site:
For my test, I set the maximum file size to 2GB, The backup was successful, writing 14GB.
The restore process (individual e-mail):
I pretty quickly was able to get a mailbox listing and then select a specific folder in a mailbox.
The search against this folder for text in the subject is still ongoing after 1 hour! The exchange folder has 200MB of data.
It would be interesting to know if anyone else has tried this. Does it make any difference on file sizes?
I suspect it might depending on how the backup files store meta data. Maybe more smaller files at say 250mb each??
In practice I will probably do 2 backup jobs, one to FTP for offsite, and the other to a local storage. I do love having 3 options for restores (file, smtp, or restore back to exchange)..

That's an idea... I actually just came back from a meeting, and after 5 hours, it was still conducting its search... The backup took over 10 hours to do (full backup of 14 GB), Over a 2x T1 (QOS throttled down to 1.5 mbs)... I'll give that a shot tonight and see how that goes... Of course doing the same type of restore from a local source is no problem.

Okay, this is what I have setup:
-Daily Full Backup of my exchange storage Group to Local storage
-Weekly Full Backup of exchange mailboxes to FTP with daily incrementals, filtering out deleted items
What I did yesterday was a full storage group backup to FTP...
My "educated guess" is that I can only get proper incrementals by doing incrementals on only one of the backups defined above . Both backups run after midnight so should be mostly okay...
