Recovery of older versions of files

I am wondering if it is possible to recover an older version of a file when using backup and recovery.
We backup direct to a NAS device and then incremental backups to one location but is it possible to recover an older version of a file in the backup or do i need to setup seperate backups so that I have different versions of backups
