How do I correct insufficient space in recovery destination. Never had this before?

Well, I had to resort to FDisk and even a brand new disk. The problem remains.
I have two verified backups of my C drive. Neither will restore to any drive (even one with a TB free, whereas the backup is 74GB).
I have tried from with a clean install of windows and (for all drives) the message is 'there is insufficient space in the recovery destination'.
Strangely, from a Boot Acronis disk, the MBR always gets trashed.
Trying to restore my 74GB backup to a clean windows (200GB free), even have run checkdisk etc.
Does anyone have any ideas please?
