Restore backup of old computer to new computer

Thread needs solution

I've made a backup of my old computer ( not a clone ) and just purchased a new computer both with windows Vista. Can I use my backup ( on a portable drive ) and restore it to my new computer and have all my files, programs, settings, etc. image into my new PC? Or do I need a Cloned Image?

If the Backup you made was by selecting the entire hard drive (Disk 1 checked) then it can be used to restore on the new computer.  But you will need the Universal Restore option that goes with the Workstation version of True Image.  UR does not work with the Home version.  Which version do you have?

I have the Home version. I tried to clone C: on my old computer but it failed to do so. I am using approx. 100gb of C: ( 300gb total hard drive size )on my old computer and tried to clone to a 120gb portable hard drive. Can you tell me if the portable hard drive is not large enough or do I just need to try to clone once again? My old computer works fine and I have the Acronis T.I. 2009 disk.  Thanks, Larry

The destination drive for a clone needs to be large enough for the used space on the source drive.

Since it is the Home version (btw, you should really post this in the True Image forum) you can try this and see if it would work.  Change the display adapter to Standard VGA - this may not be possible with Vista since the "smarts" in Vista will detect what your video card really is.  If you are able to do so, then make a whole disk backup while the system is in the Standard VGA mode.

Next restore this backup using the bootable Rescue CD to the new computer.  You will see a whole slew of "Found New Hardware" pop ups.  Let it finish.  Then look in Device Manager to see what drivers were not found.  The Display Adapter will be one so you will then have to install the correct driver for it.

Hello Larry Jackson and DwnNDrty,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Please also remember that in order to clone your Windows system to a different hardware, you should first prepare Windows using Microsoft System Preparation Tool (Sysprep).

Please be aware that according to Acronis software licensing policy, you should purchase one copy of Acronis program per each machine it will be used with.

Thank you.

I just upgraded my Gateway DX4300 to Windows 7 and did a full C: partition backup to my new 500 gig external hard drive. It completed successfully but when I went to look at some recent photos on my computer, a picture folder (and only one folder) was there but the folder was empty. Also found out that all of my ITunes music was missing as well as a few documents from My Documents folder.
I did a partial restore from my Backup.TIB and got the photos, documents and music back but need to know why TI Home 2009 did not get certain items during the backup. Scares me to think what else did not get backed up!!!
Can someone help.
By the way, thanks to all for your help with my first problem.
