Restore To Dissimilar Hardware Results In BSOD

Thread needs solution

Trying to restore an image backup of a Dell R720 server to a Dell R730 server.  After completion of the recovery there are a few errors in the log.  A copy of the log is attached.  The driver not found errors are:

  • PCI\VEN_1000_DEV_005_1F491028_REV2
  • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D2D&SUBSYS_06001028&REV_05
  • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D26&SUBSYS_06001028&REV_05
  • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D62&SUBSYS_06001028&REV_05
  • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8D02&SUBSYS_06001028&REV_05

The first driver listed is for a PERC 730H MINI which is the RAID controller for the server. I am 99.99% sure I have included that driver in the install path.   I was able to get the driver files from Dell.   After the restore when I reboot I am greeted with a BSOD.  The BSOD screen capture is attached.  I know the backup is OK since I was able to restore it on a similar piece of hardware a R720 server to a R720 server and it worked with no issues.  I attempted to create a Windows PE bootable disk utilizing Acronis.  When I booted off that media it would lock up on Windows is loading files.....  The progress got to the end but then it would just hang.  I have created the bootable media including the drivers, I have included a folder to search and I have also indicated under mass storage to load it.  It does not matter what I specifiy it just does not want to work.

Any ideas??

Hello,

The BSOD tells us that the storage drivers is not loaded. One possibility is that the new hardware doesn't supprot the OS at all. If this OS is not included in the driver files, we won't be able to install them either.

For example, it is impossible to install the Windows XP on new Dell machines because XP drivers don't exist. In this situation, we will not be able to do a universal restore operation.

If the OS is supported and the drivers are valid, I would suggest manually selecting the correct driver for your storage device in the restoration options. (Install Anyway button). This usually works in these cases where the automatic device detection fails due to whatever reason (like a non-standard inf file from the vendor)

First off thanks for the response.

The new server arrived with the OS server 2008 R2 embedded.   This is the same OS (embedded as well) that was being used on the server we are trying to restore.  Since this is the case I would assume the driver is compatible with the OS.  Would you consider that a safe assumption?

I have tried the install anyway option during the restore and it did not make a difference.  Do you know of any other options at this point?  It seems from reading the forums in the past there were issues with installing PERC raid controllers is it possible this is still a problem with Acronis?  Again we are using Acronis version 11.5.32308 if that makes a difference.

Hello,

Yes, it is a very safe assumption in that case.

The build might make a difference and I would definitely suggest trying with the latest bootable media. Especially considering that you don't need to update the product to do this. Wou can just download an ISO image (the Linux based one) of the latest build media from your account.

If that doesn't work, I would suggest contacting support for this issue.
