Hello All,
I have a bunch of oracle servers, that i need to create backup (disaster planning) images or backups and when needed i have to restore to completely different hardware, including raid controllers, scsi, or sas, sata drives.
Is it possible as "Acronis® Backup & Recovery™ 10 Universal Restore™ software" claims. Has anyone tried it before and can someone share their experience.
I am seriously looking for disater recovery software for oracle servers.
Note: Windows 2003 sp and Oralce 8i to 11G are my softwares and i run a lot dell servers in raid 5, raid 10 and raid1's.
Thanks

Hello Jenefa!
Welcome to Acronis Forum!
Thank you for sharing your concerns with us. Unfortunately I cannot provide you with the information regarding other customers' experience, but I would like to assure you that scenario you have specified is a common one and you should face any issues with it. Let me just provide you with some additional details - maybe you will find this information useful.
Since you have several machines you are planning to backup and restore onto the dissimilar hardware, we need to choose the correct product. Acronis Universal Restore is actually an add-on - it is integrated into the main program and will not work without it. Our choice depends on our scenario.
In case you would like to be able to manage the backup process from one machine, we need a centralized solution for servers: Acronis Backup and Recovery Advanced Server. In case you do not need the centralized management we can should use Acronis Backup and Recovery Server for Windows - it has the same functionality except remote control features and a bit cheaper. I would advise you to test the solution to see whether it really suits your needs and you feel comfortable using it. Also feel free to check our Documentation: Installation and Usability User's Guides, Quick Start Guides and White Sheets, etc.
Trial versions are full functional and has the following limitations:
- 15 days of work
- Trial Acronis Bootable Rescue Media can restore only
- Advanced version: only 5 machine are available for remote backup
- There is no trial version of Acronis Universal Restore
Should you decide what to choose, I'd suggest you to pay attention to the following information, it may be useful:
- Unfortunately there is no brick-level backup available for Oracle Database. It can be backed up only fully and only with the entire OS.
- In order to backup the database along with the entire system you will have to freeze its services for 2-3 seconds (on the moment of creation of snapshot). It will be done automatically, all you need to do it enable VSS in the manual options. See chapter 3.4.1.4 in the User's Guide
- You can definitely restore your system onto any dissimilar hardware. Please note that prior to restoring to new hardware you need also to contact the vendor of the RAID controller (or other mass storage device - e.g. SCSI disk controller, motherboard, etc) and request the latest drivers for this mass storage device.
Then please unpack them from the package they are sent to you, so that the drivers were in .inf and .oem format
I would also advise you to take a look at the detailed Acronis Universal Restore Guide with the step-by-step screenshot.
I would appreciate if you could kindly let us know whether there is still something confusing you or you still have any questions - we will be glad to assist!
Thank you!
