Restore to VHD - From .TIB created with Win XP - How to?

Thread needs solution

Hi Forum Members,

I have an old Windows XP PC that is giving me some problems; that I want to retire, but still keep the content that is on it.

I managed to run a full image backup on it using an old version of Acronis V?.

What I want to do is to create a VHD from the .TIB file created in the backup that I can use on Virtual PC on my Vista machine.

So, my questions are:
1) Is this the most suitable course of action?
2) What tools do I need?
3) Do I need to restore the backup before creating the VHD?
4) Is there a good tutorial that tells me how to do this?

Thanks in advance
Greg

OK, I have created a .VHD and a .VMC, that was easy, but it just starts to boot and gives me a warning about failing to boot correctly last time and takes lots of CPU (~90%) and I have just left it doing its thing for about 30 minutes and no response from the VPC.

Any suggestins would be great.

Thanks
Greg

Greg,

What version of TI did you use to create the backup image (was it 5)? If using a version older than Echo (9.5/9.7), I would recommend restoring the image and creating a new one using B&R. Then do the VM/VHD conversion on that image.

I've done exactly what you're trying to do and it worked fine. I used Echo Workstation 9.5. I created an image using TI 10, converted it to a VPC/VHD using Echo and then attached it to a VM in VPC. The steps for B&R are basically the same except that you don't convert the image directly. Instead, you "restore to the VM" and B&R creates the files for it.

If you've done the conversion successfully and you're still getting errors when booting, what are your VM settings? Does the VM have the same amount (or more) RAM assigned as the original computer?

What are the specifications of the host computer?

Do other VPC VMs run correctly?
