Restoring a Windows Server 2008 R2 to VMWare Virtual Machine

I did an image of a Windows 2008 R2 server with Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 11639, I tried to restore to an HP DL-380 G3 and an HP DL-380 G4 servers with universal restore and the system just keeps rebooting and will not boot up, I've done system restores of Windows 2003 servers to these same servers in the past with universal restore and no problems, also tried to convert to Virtual Machine for VMWare Player and the restored server will not boot at all, is there any update or special procedures I have to follow when restoring a Windows 2008 R2 AD server, this will be used in a LAB so Virtual Machine would be primary choice, thank you.

Hi,
had the same issue with an Windows 2003 Server with a corrupt Harddrive, the server was running fine, but i couldnt make an image.
So i used vmware converter and made an image to an external harddisk, this was easy and worked fine.
With this image i was able to create a virtual machine of the server.

You don´t need to pay for acronis products if there is an easy, free and "working" solution available.

Why don´t you create a complete system backup with windows 2008 R2 and restore it with the windows 2008 R2 boot media, it´s easy.
I did´t that with an windows 2008 Domain Controller running exchange 2007. (Backup with system backup, restore with boot media in a new vm)
