retention rules

Hello,
My destination backup is an ftp server.
I make a backup job whit one time full backup and then incremental every day, after 5 days with retention rules I consolidate the backups and keep only 5 days of backup.
After a few days the backup still works but the retention rules doesn’t work anymore and I get ‘error occurred while writing file’ with cancel or retry to choose from.
I have to manually remove the backups and begin all over again.
I know it is not a right problem because I can delete any backup file.
Does anybody knows why I the retention job doesn’t works anymore after a few days?
