Setup Backup & Recovery 11 for the first time and am getting these warnings and error
Hi,
I recently setup Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 to backups of my workstation. Each backup performed has the results "Succeeded with warnings". I want to make sure the backups are good, and would prefer to fix the warnings and error. Below are the log entry details for the 2 warnings and 1 error.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

I changed my Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) from "Hardware/Software - Select automatically" to "Software - Acronis VSS Provider". I'll let you know if it eliminates the error or warnings. Thanks for you help.
Sincerely,
Steve

Steve,
I think you need to raise a support ticket as I don't have any further suggestions and certainly not sure where the Grub loader problem has come from.

Did you try "Software - system provider" option for VSS ?

I have the same issue , did any one help me to fix this issue ?

Hi dev-anon, I will try the "Software - system provider" option. If this option does not work, is disabling VSS an acceptable option? What are the disadvantages of disabling VSS? Thanks.

Changing the VSS setting to "Software - system provider" did not resolve the problem either. I think I am going to disable the VSS service.
I still have the GRUB loader issue. I am going to look into requesting help from Acronis. It sounds like I will have to use their 'pay per incident' plan.
Thanks.
Steve

Slax,
As you have ABR11, you get a years support (full version, not upgrade), so maybe you don't have to pay.

ABR11 Update 0 is out and the default VSS option has been changed to 'software - system provider' so if you install this latest build this should make it easier when setting up new jobs...
Please note if you have already setup jobs that have the VSS provider set to something else you will need to edit those jobs and chose the software - system provider option or reset the options to defaults that will also work.
Hear is a copy of the release notes for the latest ABR11 build:

I have the same problem on two HP dv8t's using Win7 Ultimate x64. I'm using the latest 15 Sep 11 build.

Support had me change VSS Software/Hardware Automatic to Hardware/Automatic. A new full backup gives the SAME errors.
- Log in to post comments

The last Support person told me to use VSS Software System Auto to enable Win7 VSS to be used. That gave the same Warning-Errors, but he said that could be expected, and the final decision on the validity of the backup should be if it passed Validation, which it did.
It seems to me that Acronis has a bit more work to do on the programming of their algorithm or their reporting. Support was very helpful, but that is not a substitute for the warm feeling users get when there are no Warnings or Errors in their precious backups.

Hello all,
Thank you very much for your comments. I am pleased to let you know that we have some additional information about this error:
- Failed to get VSS metadata for backup.
Let me clarify the two known causes for this message to appear in the logs:
1. In builds older than 17318, such warning may appear on all systems with Acronis VSS provider selected in VSS options. This issue has been resolved in Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 build 17318.
2. In all current Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 builds, this warning may appear during EFI-based system backup with enabled VSS. This issue is to be addressed in upcoming Update 1 for Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.
If you have this same issue, but you have build 17318 installed, and the system is not EFI-based - please collect the following report and contact our Support team for investigation.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Thank you.

Hello All,
Hopefully somebody has the time to gather the logs for Acronis. I wanted the software to work when I installed and, then reinstalled it, and spent hours fighting this software. I have agents for ABR 11 (build 17318 installed on 6 XP SP3 workstations and an SBS Server 2011. All relevent backup parameters and machine services are indentically configured. 2 of the XP workstations throw the same errors as documented in the first posting of this comment string. An explicit guide for proper configuration to eliminate this error, or a bug fix in the next build would be appreciated. Another bug has the time of day s in the body (text) of notification emails showing the backup events occuring 7 hours after the actual event! The machines are all syncronized to the correct time via the Server which sets itself to a time standars via the internet.

Jim,
If you are getting the VSS error message, try changing the VSS option to either none (on the workstations) or select the software version in the ABR11 task setup list.

Colin,
As I recall the program default setting is to the "Use Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)" button pick, and "Software-System Provider" under the "snapshot provider" submenu. There are four choices/versions ? for the "software" category in the submenu. "Select Automatically", "Acronis VSS provider", "System Provider", and "A Software provider" in the options task setup list. I'm currently using "System Provider" as in the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy service in MS XP services which is started and can be set to "manual" or "automatic" start on the workstations that do not throw the error (warning). I realize that the warning will probably go away if one picks the "do not use VSS" button (I have not done so yet). My question is why do some workstations throw a warning and not others using VSS and what benefit is there in using VSS?

Jim,
I don't know the reason why sometimes the Windows VSS works and on other installs it does't with ABR11. I suggest setting it to the Acronis VSS.
I have SBS2011 Essentials installed, I'll check and see what provider (if any) I have set up in that VM.

I checked 2 of my SBS 2011 installs and i have the same "warning" on them as well as a brand new install of Workstation 2011 latest build with the same set of warnings. Definitely an issue with the VSS module from my point of view. I have not had the time to look into the issue other than reading this Blog hopefully Acronis acknowledges the issue and rectifies it quickly. I will change to the Acronis VSS and test my backup.

This is no excuse for the software not working, but, the problem might also be solved if VSS is switched off, it isn't always needed if you aren't running Exchange or other databases.

Colin,
I'm not sure about this, but I think that the Acronis VSS service only installs when you install an agent from the Acronis SBS server package. I have 2011 SBS Server Standard and the Acronis VSS provider appears in services on that machine but not on any of the Advanced Workstation machines. I have the licence server, management console, and AMS installed on a workstation and only the agent core and agent on the 2011 SBS and manage it from the workstation. The SBS 2011 is using the system or Microsoft VSS and it doesn't throw the warning, just two of the six workstations throw these warnings. Services on the workstations don't show the Acronis VSS service as being available and on the SBS 2011 machine I'm using the MS VSS service anyway and it works without errors. So I haven't needed to experiment with Acronis VSS as "software provider" on the server because it's been backing up flawlessly using the system provider. I would turn off VSS on all the workstations but they use SQL and I don't know if it is best to use VSS when SQL in installed and used on workstations.

If you don't use VSS on the SQL machines you'd have to suspend database transactions during the imaging of the SQL component

Hi,
These issues may occur if the machine on which backups run has a drive with 4K sector size attached (e.g. 3 TB WD or Hitachi USB drive). The product fails to get correct data on the disk structure and file system and generates errors in the logs.
This is a known issue and errors won't appear in future product updates in such situations. Meanwhile these messages can be safely ignored - backups are created and can be restored just fine.
