Trialing Backup & Recovery 11 - A couple questions

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Please forgive me if this is not the right forum for these questions or I should direct my questions elsewhere.

A little background

We have just started a trial of the Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Advanced Workstation product. We are currently using Retrospect 7.6 Multi-server edition with Exchange plug-in. To make a long story short we are so frustrated by the system, ancient frustrating interface, constant backup failures and catalog corruptions and the level of support we are ready to move on and we were recommended to check out Acronis (we have already looked at other backup solutions we were not impressed with).

We currently run about 40 workstations, almost all on Windows 7 pro with a couple on Vista Business. We also run a couple of Windows Servers, one running Windows Server 2008 standard (application / database server) and another running SBS2008 with Exchange 2007 (this is our PDC/AD / email server) for which we are looking to replace the backup solution. We have other servers and systems but those are not included in this scope.

I have a couple questions:

1) What do we actually need to install as the client on the workstations?

After a lot of fiddling last week I got one workstation to connect back to the server / management console after installing three packages:

AcronisAgentCore.msi
AcronisAgentWindows.msi
AcronisManagementConsole.msi

I had to launch the console app from the client machine and connect to the server that way (console->options->machine options->machine management->centralized management). I couldn't connect any clients from the central management server despite them having the client installed.

Is this normal to install all of these separate components or is there a single deployment executable somewhere? Additionally I couldn't find any way to deploy the clients remotely but I have a feeling there is a way.

2) Does SBS Edition include Exchange Backup?

If we decide to move to Acronis we would need to purchase a license for Advanced Server SBS Edition. Does this include backup for Exchange 2007? I would assume seeing as Exchange 2007 is a component of SBS2008 that is a yes, but from the product page on the site I couldn't find any mention on it.

3) Looking for detailed backup logs

The test backups seemed to work great and testing recovery worked very smoothly indeed. The interface is so much nicer than we are used to with our current backup solution.

However our currently backup software details (in GREAT detail) everything that failed to backup. Every file that it tries to backup and is unable to is logged for review - and in fact it is rare to get, what it considers, a successful backup because it seems there is always at least one file that is locked.

I didn't see ANY errors or warnings for Acronis and spot checking shows files I expected are present. I assume there are some files could not be backed up but was unable to find any kind of very detailed log that would let me know this information as I am used to.

Again apologies for the long post and if there is a better forum / place for me to ask these questions please let me know.

Thanks,
Mike

1) Bare minimum for clients is AcronisAgentCore.msi and AcronisAgentWindows.msi .

I couldn't connect any clients from the central management server despite them having the client installed.

It's not normal. What actions you perform and is there any error message ?

You can run the main 1.5 gb installer and check 'core' and 'agent for windows' checkboxes. Or install .msi's via GP ( http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11/index.html#14132.html )

Additionally I couldn't find any way to deploy the clients remotely but I have a feeling there is a way.

There is a remote installation feature http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11/index.html#4879.html
But I'd recommend to first make sure that you can add agent to Management Server from server side.

2) No. For exchange you need Recovery for MS Exchange (SBS edition in your case), it's a separate product. Version of recovery for exchange integrated with Backup & Recovery 11 is in beta testing - http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/products/ARExchange )/beta.html .

1) From the server side I navigate to 'Machines with agents' then click 'Add a machine to AMS'. Under Name / IP I browse to the machine I want to add (or enter it manually - makes no difference).

2) Enter username / password.

3) I get a summary of the machine I want to add. I click 'Proceed'.

4) Wait several minutes with a message saying 'Adding machine [MACHINE NAME] to the management server' in the 'operation progress' window.

Then I get a message that says 'Remote Installation Failed'

Not quite sure I understand why as the authentication details I am using are for the domain admin and it works just fine if I connect from the client side to the server instead of the other way around.

Some questions - Is domain administrator included in 'acronis remote users' group on the agent machine (CS-09)? (it probably is or else it would failed after step 2) ; Is it the only machine where the issue occurs? Is it Vista or Windows 7?
Is it possible to connect from the console, installed on the machine with Management Server, directly to CS-09 machine?
Try to disable firewall on CS-09 and if there is antivirus installed, add acronis executables ("C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\" "C:\Program Files\Acronis" ) and their working directory "C:\ProgramData\Acronis " to exception list.
