Trying to back up .db and .log files, Acronis fails, MS Backup works

Running trial version of Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 for Server, database is running Adaptive Server Anywhere.

1. I can successfully backup using the windows backup tool in Server 2003 R2. The .log and .db files are in use and the backup is successful.

2. Acronis fails when backing up the same file, citing that the file is in use.
2a. I have turned on VSS for my backup
2b I have tried to turn on MS VSS by default with these instructions: http://kb.acronis.com/content/4729

Any ideas?
