Universal Restore - Dynamic disks to RAID 1 Volume

Thread needs solution

I have a Windows 2K3 Server with Backup and Recovery 10 with UR.

For reasons that I will not go into, this server was built using Windows mirroring i.e. the two disks concerned were converted to dynamic disks when the mirror was created.

We now need to re-size some of the partitions BUT cannot easily do this with dynamic disks. So we decided to use Universal Restore to restore the backup to a RAID 1 volume on the same server. We used the following procedure on the HP Proliant ML310 G4 server;

1. Collect Server from Client
2. Perform an Acronis Bare Metal Backup (1hr 10mins)
3. Enter BIOS by hitting F9 at startup
a. Enable the RAID controller
b. Hit ESC and F10 to Exit
4. Enter F8 for the Embedded SATA RAID Setup utility
a. Create an Array
b. Use Insert to add 2 disks to the Array
c. Create a RAID 1 (mirror) array
d. Manage an Array
e. Control-B to make the array bootable
f. Exit the utility
5. Boot into Acronis and restore the system from the backup
a. Choose Universal Restore
b. Automatically Search the HP Embedded RAID directory on the USB disk for drivers
c. Restore Completed reboot the system (2hr 10mins)

When the server rebooted it showed the Windows 2003 splash screen and immediately reset.

I logged into the HP Embedded RAID Utiltiy and ran a verify operation - this showed loads of errors?

Can someone say what we did wrong? e.g. was the RAID mirror not syncronised? We didnt enable the Write Cache which could have been a mistake as well?

Thanks

 Hello Martin,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/ | Acronis Corporate Products]]
The exact reason of the issue is unknown.
Have you added the latest drivers available for now from the respective web site during the recovery (*.inf or *.oem files are supported only)? Please boot the computer from a Windows installation CD, hit F6when prompted and check out whether the drivers work there. Check if the RAID/HDD is detected. Are you able to boot the system into Safe Mode?
I logged into the HP Embedded RAID Utiltiy and ran a verify operation - this showed loads of errors?
Could you please let us know the exact error messages?
Have you tried the ISOLINUX CD?
ISOLINUX Bootable Media is usually more up to date than the Acronis Loader one. This is due to the fact a new version of Acronis Bootable Media is uploaded to the website more frequently than regular product updates are released.
We have implemented the possibility to download the appropriate ISO file after logging in to your account (the serial number should be registered). Please log in to your account, go to the Registered products and downloads section -> Bootable media. Download the file.
You can find more information on how to burn an ISO image to a CD here
Please create ISOLINUX CD and restore the archive.
Please let us know the results, we should be sure that the recovery runs flawless.
Thank you.
