Universal Restore to migrate to newer laptop

Thread needs solution

Currently got a Panasonic laptop running Windows 2000 workstation and our own apps. What I want to be able to do is migrate this to a newer panasonic laptop we;ve got.

What I dont want to have to do is re-install Windows etc from scratch, re-do all our settings etc, install applications etc.

Just purchased Acronis Backup and Restore 10 workstation with Univeral Restore option. I'm hoping this will allow me to do what I want.

Only problem I have is, original laptop doesnt have a CD drive and refuses to boot from USB CD drive.

Can I install the management console on our Windows 2000 server and install the agent on the original laptop? Then network them together and take a backup (onto Server)?

If I then take the new laptop, how do I get the backup restored onto it? At the moment, its totally blank with no OS. This has got a CD drive so I could create an Acronis boot CD and boot from this. Could I run the agent like this and get the backup restored from the server onto this laptop?

Would that work?

Install the True Image software on the old laptop and use it to make an Image, also called Backup, of the entire hard drive.  Store this Image on a USB device.  Next, you need to make the bootable Rescue CD of the True Image and UR software so you need to find a computer with a CDRW drive in order to install the True Image software temporarily and burn the Rescue CD.

Then boot the new computer with the Rescue CD to restore the Image.  Remember to connect first the usb device that has the Image.   Have the driver disk with at least the video driver handy so UR can include this driver during the restore.  In fact it would make the process easier if you can copy the video driver to the same usb device that has the Image.

Thanks for the help.

Is the only way to install the Agent onto the old laptop?

I'm assuming the installed agent will be on the new laptop at the end. So I guess I could just uninstall?

Or is there a way to run the agent remotely? MApping drive on server or something? Or is having it installed locally the only way?

Hello Paul,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/ | Acronis Corporate Products]]

Please see this thread for more information.

Thank you.

We've built up a hard drive image to run on the HP NC8230 (lots of applications and configuration, and would love to avoid re-installing/re-setting up everything if possible), and need it to run on the new laptop offering from HP now.

Just wondering if Acronis can handle this hard drive migration from last year's HP model NC8230 to run on the current HP NC8430 laptop.

I have access to Ghost 8, and probably could get my hands Acronis as well from another part of the company.
