Universial Restore of XP Hangs at Loading Screen

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I'm using Backup and Recovery 10 with Universal Restore and have an issue. I imaged an old MSI PC running XP and am trying to restore it to a brand new Dell PC using Universal Restore. While restoring to the Dell PC, I inserted the driver disc, made sure the recovery used universal restore, and told it to search for drivers on the driver disc's path. After a successful restore, I tried to boot the Dell PC, but it hangs at the XP loading screen and goes into a continuous reboot loop. I did an XP fixboot and fixmbr, but neither one of those solved the issue.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

What is on the driver disk? Are you positive you have all the drivers for you newer computer in uncompressed format (*.sys)?

It's the stock Dell driver disc. I'm not sure what format they're in. Should I copy the files, uncompress them if necessary, and burn them to a new disc?

Hello d h and Pat,

Thank you for posting and thank you very much for your assistance Pat.

d h, let me help you with this issue as well please.

You are right, you will need to uncompress the files and place them somewhere where they can be accessed by Acronis Universal Restore.

I would also recommend the following article which has a step-by-step tutorial for restoring using Acronis Universal Restore.

Please let us know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Using uncompressed drivers still did not help. Is there a way to fix it with the XP recovery console after restoring the image? Would the XP disc possibly have the necessary drivers for this restore?

hi d h,

you have probably fixed this by now. if you have not, then try performing a windows XP repair installation. if you do not know how to do this... here is a link to great "how to" article http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
*note to have a current backup and you will most likely have to reinstall drivers and service packs
