We recently started using Acronis Backup & Recover 11 Virtual Edition and when we try and backup our SBS 2011 server running on our ESXi 5.0 host we get the following error.

*************************************
Simple Backup
Backing up virtual machine
Failed to read data from the disk.

retry, ignore, ignore all, cancel
**************************************

We have tried:
- disabling or using different VSS options
- backing up only one of the two Virtual disks that the virtual machine uses
- Other virtual machines work fine (linux, windows 2008 r2)

After the backup the vmware host says that the virtual machine needs consolidation but it failed. When I try to manually consolidate the virtual machine it says "Unable to Access file since it is locked."

I have attached a copy of the failed backup log.

Hello Samsons Support,

Thank you for the log provided.

According to it the problem is related to the host actually.
VMware_VDDK: [NFC ERROR] NfcFssrvrRecv: failed with code = 9
We receive this error from VMware APIS, and cannot proceed with the backup because of it.

We would advise you to troubleshoot the issues with host according to these instructions.
