vm migration problem
Based on the marketing info, I am trying to solve a VM migration problem using B&R Virtual edition 15-day evaluation.
It seems that VMware Server (the free one) isn't supported. ???
And when I tried to install the Agent in the VM it failed to register (timeout error). The VM has a production SQL server instance so it can't install the Express server so it can't install the full product in the VM, and I really don't want to anyway.
Should this be working? The installation help just says that you can register through the management console if you don't register during agent installation, it doesn't say how.
So far I'm not terribly impressed with this $2k product. We need a swiss army knife for VMs and the marketing slick on this looks like it is what we want but if it won't actually do the job it isn't what I need.
This is probably pilot error but it's not my first rodeo -- this stuff is not obvious and the help is thin.

I managed to get a similar VM to boot with networking enabled from a Linux .iso file and could connect to it from the management machine. But it shows the backup functionality as being disabled under the eval license. Huh? You're kidding, right?
Plus I can't figure out how to set up a "vault" that can be seen from the remote agent. I've got commands for setting up a "personal vault" but that doesn't seem to help. I think I could back up to a share OK if backing up were enabled.
Obviously I need to find this user guide.

OK, I didn't really want to have the database instance touched by "foreign" application but I guess I can live with it. Installation of the console against the local instance worked as expected.
The problem with connecting to the external server has got to be some kind of permissions issue but i haven't been able to diagnose it. Sometimes TCP/IP applications seem to just not work across the bridged network connections, even with all the firewalls turned off.
But I can't connect to the local machine either:

What if letting to backup from trial bootable media impede sales?
Creating vault when running from bootable media should not work, afaik - information about persnal vaults is stored in the agent installation. When you perform the backup to the share, personal vault will be created automatically.

The bootable media not working would not be an issue if the product either supported the virtualization sowtware or worked when installed in the VM. As it is it just adds insult to injury.
Oh well, nothing else I've tried has worked either. I'm going to have to rebuild this machine from file- and table-level backups and installation media.
