XP to W7 "migration"

Thread needs solution

I have an old home PC running XPsp2 and I want to "migrate" the contents of the main hard drive to a new home PC running Windows 7 (with 16GB RAM and two 1TB drives --each drive has two 500MB partitions).

I would like to use Oracle's VirtualBox to create a VM on the Windows 7 PC. To this W7 VM, I would like to restore a backup of the old XP PC.

If I install Acronis B&R v11 Advanced Workstation with Universal Restore on the new W7 PC and I place the old XP PC hard drive into a USB External case, can I create a backup of the USB drive (old PC) and retore the backup on to the W7 VM?

Thanks!

It's possible with right drivers, but the main challenge may be to reactivate XP on the new hardware. IIRC,with Windows 7 Professional (or better) it's possible to convert an existing Windows XP Professional machine to an XP Mode VM so that it will run licensed correctly like a new XP Mode VM does.
