2 failed backups result in (invalid) status

Thread needs solution

Hi, I have 2 machines that failed to back up and now in vSphere client they are greyed out and say (invalid) next to them.

They are still running as I did not lose connection to the vcenter server (which is one of the greyed out machines). I can ping and RDP into them, but thats it. What do I do now?

I removed them from inventory and re-added them to inventory. The vcenter server came back fine but my other server said it was powered off and would not power on (complained that the vswp file was in use).

So on the VMWare host running the machine doing a vm-support -x lists the machines with the wid= number.

Once I found the wid= number it's vm-support - X {wid number} then you answer No, then Yes to all subsequent prompts.

It takes about 10 minutes but it basically kills the vm process. Then when its done in vSphere client you can power it on and have full control over the virtual machine again.
